What are some Fun Food Themed Parties??

Hi all,

I had my first "Banana Split Party" and it was so much fun watching everyone
create their own master piece. They were all saying how it was such a good
idea & we should do more food relatd parties. This party was easy I bought
pratically everything plus I made 3 of my own icecreams.

For the next party I'm thought of a "Pizza Party". I'm thinking of making
some pizzas that way they can munch on that and since we'll be outside while
they're here I can make more pizza on the grill or they can fix their own to
put on the grill. How does that sound?

What are some other food realted parties???

Thanks a bunch,

Funny, I just asked the same question in another food-related forum I
frequent. Answers so far include a 'Babylon 5' party - but not being a fan,
I wouldn't know where to start. Also historical food - medieval or Roman
(http://www.thefoody.com/historic/index.html for recipes). Another
suggestion was Olympics related - serve a dish from each competing nation in
a particular event (perhaps guests could each bring one?) and then vote for
a winner...whilst watching the event on the telly. Medal presentations at
the end, of course...

Jo (looking forward to seeing other people's suggestions)

My favorite food themed party has to be a barbecue.

I like tastings. The wine tasting party comes to mind first with
several bottles of wine, good bread, a little cheese, maybe some
appetizers and a real chance to taste the wines and compare.

A cheese tasting party comes to mind next. Also consider several types
of olive oil or good vinegar. I'd love any of those parties. One of
the most intriguing tasting parties I've ever been to was in a small
rural town in Ontario where they grew strawberries. The tourists (me
and my boyfriend) were treated to 6 varieties of strawberries. These
all looked alike to me, and if I didn't have them next to each other, I
would have said they tasted alike too. Instead, I got to try them right
next to each other and understand for the first time that some are a
little sweeter, some a little tarter, that there are subtle differences
in texture and wateriness. Meanwhile, I was getting my fill of fresh
strawberries, something that's hard to do since I'll gladly eat them all
day.

We recently had a party (upstate NY) for my niece, who will be going
to college in Queens. So the "theme" of the party was NYC, celebrating
some of the different neighborhoods, but not slavishly so. It was a
"theme," not a documentary. I planned the menu and made a lot of the
food, with significant contributions from others. It was a big
success, as judged by the amount of food eaten.

Menu
Coney Island: Hamburgers, Nathan's Hot Dogs, potato salad, watermelon
Harlem: BBQ- pulled pork, corn
Lower East Side (Jewish): mini-knishes, corned beef/rye, cole slaw,
cheesecake
Little Italy: pasta, sausage/meatballs, tossed salad, pizzelles
Chinatown (Asian): egg rolls, bulgogi (Korean), Lo Mein, bao (steamed
buns)
Astoria (Greek): stuffed grape leaves, souvlaki, tzasiki sauce, orzo
salad, hummus, baklava
Jackson Heights (Indian): tandoori chicken, curry potatoes, mangoes,
tiny bananas

And, of course, graduation cake (in the shape of a big apple).

We had enough but not too much!

I have a quesadilla baker. At work we used to have 'make your own
quesadilla' pot luck lunches. Everyone brought some ingredients and we
baked our own quesadillas. There were, of course, chips and salsa and
refried beans to be had on the side as well as bean salads and the like.
Alas, we couldn't have margaritas ;)

I think this would be a good Fall party.

How about a fondue party -- dark chocolate dip for dessert -- for adults and
older children? An International feast is an old favorite, if you have a
various enough crowd. A Narnian or Calormine dinner, with guests in costume.

A "King of the Hill" party, with at least one Texas jello salad. Or you could
go trashy, show "Dallas," and get some more upper-class cusine. How about a
dance contest for all ages -- dress-up, too -- with a cake as a prize? If you
have a large number of knitters/sewers/quilters, you could work on a single
project, and have a quilting party with popcorn and a big meal at the end.

Hell You're way closer to a Ocean or Gulf then I am.

Got your Mallet ready, head out on the highway.

What are some Fun Food Themed Parties??

Around 1972-73 we had a 1940's party complete with decor, music, costumes,
and food. There were around 40 people, most of whom were only born in the
1940's. It was an all-around challenge for most of the guests who had to
research the clothing and food.

Unfortunately, I can't really remember much about the food, but we had a
contest for the most authentic dish and the most authentic costume, and
everyone had a great time. I do remember there were a lot of hot and cold
hors d'Oeuvre that no one serves anymore. There were also a couple of
aspics and patés.

Wrong time of year for this, but years ago my brother and I used to host an
annual "tropical/reggae" party every spring. The menu featured lots of
fruit; I'd cut a pineapple in half and core it, then cut up the chunks of
fruit and put them in the shells on a bed of ice with chunks of melon,
sliced kiwi, strawberries, etc. We'd have meat, cheese and crackers and
other nibbles and (alcoholic) fruit punch. Reggae music on the stereo.

Everyone who came in the door got "laid" LOL (we bought cheap plastic leis
from a party supply store). Tropical shirts/outfits were required. A
friend built a limbo set-up for us - two tall poles with pegs to support the
limbo rod; we had a limbo contest. I remember one year it was raining so
hard a friend showed up wearing a snorkle and flippers. Good time was had
by all!

Good idea. What's the name of that new book about artificial food in the
'50's? You could have a competition for the weirdest (edible) food, or the
most day-glo food.
