Default I Guess Summer Is Over....

....so I'm going out to buy a crockpot and start investigating some hearty
cooler - weather recipes....

It is positively *autumnal* here in Chicago, prolly won't crack 65 for a
daytime high for awhiles. I see it's hot in the West, but we have had a
very cool summer generally here in the Midwest. No monstrous killer
heatwaves for a change, just a few humid days in the high 80's....

Summer was fine while it lasted ;-]

I'm not ready for heart crockpot recipes just yet. This week it's been 108
+ degrees here in the Phoenix area. I think "summer" will be with us for a
while yet.

I wish it was like that here. As it is, I'm hoping it will stay below 85*
this weekend when we have everyone over!

It's been wonderfully cool and dry here in Cincinnati most of the summer. I
have used a blanket at night lately and have had to lower the windows.
Yesterday when I was having my morning coffee on the deck, I noticed that
the air smelled like fall. The leaves are starting to change color a bit
and enough have dropped (due to cicada damage, no doubt) that I can see
rather far into the woods. I bet I haven't used the AC more than two weeks
total this year.

The same here...it's been wonderful. One summer without days - long power
blackouts, emergency heat alerts, and hundreds of people literally dying of
the heat....yeah, I can dig it. We have had some really neat and fierce
thunderstorms, but I enjoy those....

Yeah, I just noticed that here...I was thinking "Is this what I'm
seeing...???"

STL is fairly "tropical" compared to us; the heat there can have a true
Southern fierceness, but I've noticed it's not been so bad this year....

Yeah, but you down there usually have a long pleasant autumn that can last
through or even past Thanksgiving. (In '98 I was down there and I remember a
75 degree spell a week before Christmas, it was actually HOT, as we were
running around preparing for a party at my friend's house on Flora
Place)..and your Spring starts a lot earlier than ours...there are
compensations....

I've seen some neat blizzards in STL, though...all that moist Gulf air
flowing up makes for some heavy snow.

We haven't even had the thunderstorms this year. It was a bit too dry in
the early fall, but we are now a bit above normal for precipitation. The
lawn is nice and green without any supplemental water. Now, if we just have
a mild winter. Thank god we got a new high efficiency furnace last year or
our heating bill would have been sky high. Natural gas prices are about 40%
higher than two years ago.

Yep, our hottest months are Sept/Oct. We've barely even BEGUN summer.

Welcome to San Francisco! West of Twin Peaks, we are
overcast with fog too. I remember one August with NO SUN.

Heh. That's because October is often the most summery of months in SF. I
got a kick out of someone I was recently talking to who complained "G-d, we
went to SF for a vacation in July and it was so COLD!"...I replied, "Ya
gotta take yer jackets to SF in the summer, just because it's in California
doesn't mean it's warm and sunny...".

I do like the microclimate aspect of your area....

Blame me. I bought a house with a swimming pool this spring. The
summer's been unusually cool even here in Texas.

If it was raining whiskey, I'd be outside with a sieve.

Dunno. Some years ago (1991?) we had a bigass snow dump on Halloween
and the next day. That's early. I think the last date for snowfall is
in mid-late May. It's happened. Doesn't stay, but it's fallen.
It's 48 degrees right now -- I set the oven to self-clean to warm up the
kitchen. It's 64 degrees in my house right now. Coffee tastes good.

Correct, it was 1991. My first visit to the Twin Cities, in fact, and
I spend two extra days there because of it.

Seen that once in the 80's, and in May of '97 my scuba club had to
cancel planned dives in Mille Lacs and Square Lake because ice-out
hadn't happened yet (and for Mille Lacs, the east side still had ice
in June).

A few years ago (ok more than a few...) my better half and I were tent
camping in the mountains of NW PA and it snowed the morning of July 3rd.
I grew up in that area and had never seen that before.

Greg, if you insist, you can have our 90-something weather from down here in
the mid-south It's not even 10:30 AM and already close to 80F.

We departed for Bangkok in August, 1969 and flew out of San Francisco. We
were there for a day or so before the flight and I remember we ate at a
Chinese restaurant (don't ask me which one, I was 9 years old). Every time
the door to the place opened a bitterly cold wind blew in. I was used to
the relatively hot temps of Virginia and was freezing!

I'd go beyond "not been so bad" right to, "fantastic most of the time".
The number of times I've been able to shut off the AC in July and August
is amazing. Really helps with that old electric bill.

I'm kinda surprised you stayed. We like our crappy weather -- it keeps
the riffraff out. "-)

The SO (aka Florida Boy) has been kvetching about the lack of AC in our
house. I survived the summer of 1980 in Dallas (64 consecutive days
when the high temp was over 100), so this alleged heat wave in Seattle
is nothing.

Cindy, waiting for tomatoes to turn up on my plants
