8 minutes because that's the way I taught to do it so long ago I no
longer remember who said it. If you look at the kernels, you can guess
how long it should take. The smaller the kernel and the fresher the
corn, the less time it should take to cook.

Certainly not 10 minutes, that would toughen the corn. 5 or 6 minutes should
do.
As for the microwave suggestion, (wrapping it in plastic wrap), I wouldn't do
that. The plastic could melt if in for too long. Better to wrap it in wet
paper towels. However !! The best way to cook corn on the cob is NOT to shuck
the hulls and silk off first. Thoroughly wet the corn, letting some of the
water get under the hulls/leaves. Put in microwave, two at a time, for 2
minutes. Remove and using towel to protect your hands, just slide off the
leaves and silk. The silk will just come right off in one piece with the
leaves. No more picking at that pesky corn silk.

I usually start it in cold water, put it on high heat, and take it out
when the water starts to boil.
Because.
Or I dump it into boiling water and take it out when the water comes
back to the boil.
Because.

Drop ears in boiling water. Turn off the heat when it comes
back to a boil. Serve soon.

Why? I used to boil for 3 minutes and saw no difference
when I changed. Cooking corn as short a time as possible
has always been suggested. It doesn't toughen and get starchy
and it retains a fresh, sweet flavor.

Tip: If you grow your own, pick in late afternoon, just
before cooking. Daylight/photosynthesis creates sugars in
the corn. Darkness changes the sugars to starch.

8 minutes works for me for boiling, but ever since I first tried it bbqed I
have much preferred it that way. I always buy freshly picked corn and soak
it for a half hour or so and then toss it on the BBQ, tuning it every few
minutes until the outside is charred. You can get sophisticated and peel
the stalks back to remove silk before cooking, but it is not necessary.

Steaming works great and saves time and energy. Put an inch or 2 of water in
a large pot. When you shuck the corn put enough of the husks in the pot to
well-cover the water, with the ears on top. Cover and bring to a boil. When
the lid is too hot to touch, count 5 minutes.

I cook cook in a pot. I put it in cool water (what ever temp comes outa the
cold tap) and put it on the stove on high. When the water just starts to
boil, the corn is ready. Remove it to a platter and serve. This way it is
sweet, still a little crisp and melts the butter just fine. I use no salt
in the water...all salting is done at the table. I like this method for
cobs or kernels.

Boil?

take fresh ears, roast over indirect heat from wood fire for about half an
hour. Remove ears, shuck and serve.

Don't boil it; steam it! Two minutes is plenty.

Why? Steam it to keep the sugars from leaching out. Steam it BRIEFLY to keep
its freshness from turning into stew.

I've tried different ways. Microwave, grilled, boiled for 1, 3, and 5
minutes. Other than picking it from the stalk, husking immediately
and digging in, for my money get the water boiling, toss the corn in
for 1 minute to heat and take it out.
