Thinking of her as I eat my fine ripe summer peach this morning.

I may take my also-deceased mother's copy of The Art of French Cooking off
the shelf and rustle up something special.

Wonder what would honor them the most? What to nibble in Julia's memory?

How sad. All my life, my mother used Julia's Mastering the Art of French
Cooking, and that was one of my first cookbooks when I set up housekeeping.
I loved watching her on TV, and how she could rise above even an apparent
disaster on camera with relaxed aplomb. I think my favorite moment of
watching Julia Child's TV shows was when, after putting together her Mont
Saint Michel Gateau of apples and crepes, she whipped out a blow torch to
carmelize the sugar topping.

Just this week, I baked an old favorite for my mother's birthday cake from
Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It was one of the first cakes I learned
how to bake, and I'm so glad I did. The Biscuit au Buerre has been a
reliable favorite dessert in our family for decades.

Julia, may you now be cooking in the kitchen of your dreams, with all your
favorite ingredients fresh, flavorful and right at hand. I think the food
in the afterlife has just become more delicious. But down on Earth, we will
miss you and your wonderful hooty voice sorely.

Adieu and Bon Appetit, Dear Julia.

Or 93rd if you count her original birthday. Sorry.

I wonder what Jacques Pepin is doing today.

Well, I packed her books away, and now I am cursing myself for doing
so. I do have copies of some of her recipes, and I think I will cook
them this weekend. Probably on Sunday. I have her Steak Diane
version, which I always liked. I just got a whole chicken from the
market, so I could roast a chicken in her honor.
Julia also taught me to make puff pastry, and I am toying with the
idea of making some this weekend, and using it as a tart shell.

Anyone else planning on cooking Julia's recipes this weekend?

It was a potato pancake, and I think it landed on the stove.

Since she died in her sleep, I hope it was after a day of good eating.
Certainly it was after 91 years of butter.

LOL I saw that show. In fact, it drew my interest because I had just recently
had my first experience with monkfish. My wife had brought some home from the
local fish market. The fish monger hd referred to it as the poor man's
lobster, but I don't know why. It wasn't much cheaper than lobster. At any
rate, what I saw being cooked and served were two lovely chunks of fish that
had a slight resemblance to lobster, in looks, texture and taste. But it was
on Julia's show that I discovered what a foul looking creature the monkfish
is. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but I have to admit that
it was better for me and my appreciation of monkfish to have tasted it before
seeing one.

Can you share the steak Diane recipe? I love SD and have never
tried JC's recipe.

It's too hot in Sac to cook. But I think I'll crack open a bottle
of wine and toast a truly wonderful woman. I"m glad she was able
to leave in what I hope was a gentle passing. She was inspirational.
I was teary-eyed when today's newscast showed the end of one of her French
Chef shows and she said 'bon appetit.'

Au revoir, lovely Julia.

Actually, there really was one with a fowl. I just can't remember which
one.

Julia Child was truly one of the very few people who became a legend in
her own time.

Although I missed many of her shows, I began watching her with her very
first show.

She was truly a wonderful lady, a fount of culinary knowledge, but always
inquisitive and eager to learn from anyone.

I loved her - remember watching her on PBS when I was about 7 or 8.
My favorite episode was when she was showing how to split a chicken
and she said "You just give it a whack with your cleaver - WHACK!
WHACK!" as she hit the chicken really hard with the cleaver. My
brother and I laughed our butts off. She's no doubt instrumental in
spiking my love of cooking.

It is sad, she dropped a chicken on the floor and then said as she
wiped it off " You are all alone in the kitchen! Excuse the spelling
I'm into the cooking brandy.
