Default Soy milk?

Okay, I have come to understand, drinking milk is very bad for me.
The consequenses earlier this week were not pretty. It's not what
you think, I just wind up with a throat full of mucus. Sorry I
waited until dinnertime to say that.

Well, some days I just want a bowl of cereal. I don't think Lactaid
will cure the mucus thing.

So, what, in your experience, will my reaction to trying soy milk be,
or will that even help me? Does it taste anything like milk? Thanks
for your help.

It kind of tastes like tofu. You might like it on cereal if you make it
double strength, but you won't like it if you expect it to taste like milk.

You wanna might try goat's milk.

Try buying a container of the Vanilla Silk soymilk from your local
Starbucks. It's soy milk made for the mass palates, so it's about as
bland as they come, and not bad at all.

It doesn't taste like milk, but it isn't bad. Like any taste, it
depends on what you like. I use it as a milk substitute for baking
where it substitutes very well. Your best bet is to try it and see what
you think. It gives some people gas if they usually get gas from tofu
or other soy products. It doesn't cost that much, and it is available
all over so dive in and buy a box. If it doesn't work for you, get used
to dry cereal. (I never got into the habit of putting milk ON cereal.
I drink milk WITH cereal and take the cereal dry. This has worked for
me for years.)

I use the Silk unsweetened soy milk...found in the refrigerated center
with regular milk.
I find it to be very good and use it to cook with in such as custards,
puddings etc. I also use it in coffee.
Works very well and we like the taste.

Thanks *everyone* for the insight. I am not looking forward to this
experiment, but I think I have to get over it. It's not the cost of
trying, but the degree of disappointment I can expect. Hey, that's
life. People have worse problems.

On cereal? You won't notice much difference. It's when you chug down a
glass of it that you will. I dunno if you take cream in your coffee; if so,
you won't find a soy substitute for half and half/light cream. My dos
pesos.

Good luck with the new milk.

Soy milk bites no matter what brand or flavour. Try plain unsweetened
yogurt on your cooked cereal. (You wouldn't be eating any of that
processed kack would you?) Or try ice cold apple cider if you must
have liquid.

Yogurt with live bacterial cultures shouldn't cause the problem you
describe (which I also experience).

Soy milk is a very highly processed food. Totally incomprehensible
that people who want natural whole foods would even consider using it.
?!?!

The fermented tofu mentioned in an earlier post may have been tempeh.

If you don't like soy milk, you might find rice milk more to your
liking. My sister is terribly lactose intolerant, doesn't care for
soy milk and uses something called "Rice Dream," if I remember the
name correctly.

Rice Dream is indeed the name. I tried it when I was trying to sort out
if I was lactose intolerant (I'm not). It's quite nice.

Soy milk is good for smoothies, as well as cereal.

I didn't care for it. I tried plain soy milk and vanilla soy milk.
Taken straight, they tasted like bean water. In my coffee, they
tasted like coffee and bean water.
