Default HP SAUCE Repice needed

I am looking for a recipe for some English meat sauce.

It is called HP sauce and is somewhat like A1, but not very
close. Any British out there have an inside on the recipe
for this GREAT STEAK SAUCE????

do you ask because you can't find it in the supermarket? HP steak sauce is in
all the supermarkets here. Why would you want to buy all those ingredients and
try to make a copy of it? --too much work, too many leftovers, and ending up
with too much steak sauce.

Just depends on where 'here' is. Can't get HP in local supermarkets here
in ABQ. Hundreds of hot sauces yes, HP no.

I see. No HP in Albuquerque. I'd send you my bottle if I could. I tried it
and don't much care for it. Your header indicates you're from UK. I know what
you mean. A good friend (American) lived in London for a few years. Every
time I went to visit her she requested peanut butter (apparently called "ground
round nuts" there, if you can find it.) I also took her cantaloupe and certain
American candies she missed.

It is in every supermarket here in Sandy Eggo that I have ever seen. No
major supermarkets in ABQ? Be careful though, most HP sauce in the U.S. is
now made in New Jersey and doesn't taste the same as the real stuff.

LOL I don't especially miss HP; used to buy the cheaper generics anyway.
But TY for the offer It just belongs on certain food items, like
bacon butties and a fresh hot pile of chips (fries). But don't quote me
on that!

Peanut butter is called just that in England, although peanuts are
sometimes referred to as ground nuts. It's commonly available in any
supermarket, but not in the abundance of brands it is in the US. Peanut
butter with sugar in it is usually called 'American style'.
Can't imagine why you had to bring your friend cantaloupe and even why
it was allowed in the country. Musk melons (of which cantaloupes are one
variety) abound in UK supermarkets in the proper season.

Not that I've seen. There are major supermarkets such as a Kroger's
division, Wmart etc. San Diego is a much larger city with a more diverse
population though. You probably don't get fresh Hatch chiles in the
quantities that we can get. Right now a 30 lb sack is USD9.00 or so,
roasting is free.
Doesn't surprise me that HP would be made in US now. It really is too
cheap to bother with importing it, isn't it?

Fortunately we have a local British Grocery store, so I can get UK made HP.
It is more expensive, but it tastes so much better than the US stuff.

Try a half of a cup of catsup, a quarter cup of worstershire
sauce, and quarter teaspoon of anchovie paste, as a base. then you can
add other seasonings that you like.

Lucky you. Where is that shop? Don't think there was one when I lived in
SD some years ago.

It is in Solana Beach (about 24 miles north of downtown). It has been there
for about 15+ years. It is part of a chain here in California. Most of the
grocery shops are in Northern California (East Bay Area).

There is also one in La Mesa and it has been there for more than 15
years.

The first place I saw/tasted/bought HP was in London.

No particular craving for it now, but I have seen it in grocery stores
as well as 'fancy' stores (I want to say Bristol Farms) I used it by
pouring onto a block of cream cheese and serving with Triscuits as an
appetizer. Now I do the same with jalapeno jelly....

You can buy it at shopenglandonline.com. It is a subset of yahoo shops.

A 16 oz bottle is about $7

Yes it's been more than 15 years since I lived in Del Mar, so I know it
wasn't there then.
Are all those good Mexican restaurants still in Solana Beach?

I went to HP foods online nad their ad is that it is "suitable for
vegetarians". I had a roommate who preached to me about anchovies
being thinking beings and all and there was one Wostershire she would
use and one that she wouldn't...I tyhought Lea and Perins was the
lesser known one...sorry.

Now, I eat anchovies straight from the can and always on
pizza...wonderful, salty thinking beings!

Again, apology. Cindy

Since that phrase does have legal standing in the UK, it's probably
correct then.

LOL no need to apologise. There may be Worcester-effect sauces around
without anchovies, but hardly the real thing.
