I finally went shopping at Jungle Jim's north of Cincinnati today. What a
store! It took me 2 1/2 hours just to walk thru the entire store (it's set up like a labyrinth), and I'm sure I missed a couple areas. They had lots of things there I didn't even know they still made, like Faygo Redpop and Rock and Rye in 16 oz. glass bottles (I bought one of each). They had a room that just sold cigars, a vast wine and liquor area, beers from around the world, and lots of exotic fruits and vegetables I've never seen before, like Yucca Root and Burro Bananas. There were separate areas for foods of dozens of different nationalities (including frozen foods), and an extensive area of hot sauces from around the world. I picked up a bottle of what I think is an oriental hot sauce made by Tabasco; I can't wait to try it out. I bought a bottle of wing sauce from the Anchor Bar in Buffalo. There were two separate delis in the store (one for domestic meats and cheeses, one for imported), and virtually every brand of cheese made on Earth. The only thing I was looking for that I did not find was Heinz spicy brown mustard, but I emailed them after I got home and perhaps they will stock it in the future. It was like Disneyland for food lovers; I can't wait to go again. I wound up spending 170 bucks there, and I think my diet is ruined for the next couple weeks. Cool, isn't it? ![]() frankly, I find just walking around it to be huge entertainment, because I'm never quite sure what new thing I'll see. The place has everything from single-serving mini key lime pies to Taylor Pork Roll to McVities plain chocolate digestives to frozen eel to durian and more. I'm not sure I've ever heard or seen anything quite like Jungle Jim's. In the recent past, they've expanded their store even more and added that huge section in front with the different delis along with a larger section for British foodstuffs, a chocolate store and a foreign film store. They're still working on adding the monorail and the large fish tanks. My mother got lost in their wine section and was VERY indignant about it. ![]() Ariane |

I went past the lobster tanks and seafood department, but didn't see fish tanks. I was wondering if there was anything located on the second floor, or is that where their stock areas are located. My Kettering, Ohio brother-in-law shops there occasionally (and raves about it). I wonder how long a drive it is from Kettering to Jungle Jim's. We have driven to Dayton, but now that Continental has added a direct flight from Houston to Dayton we fly. Sounds like it's worth the trip to Jungle Jim's. Chris in Pearland, TX |

Nope, nothing on the second floor as of yet. In the section with the large bags of rice, there are some steps leading up to a platform where (I think) they intend to put in larger fish tanks. The film store is located nearby, right next to the counter where they sell the chocolates. In the front of the store, they usually have maps set out, so you can make sure you don't miss anything. ;D Ariane |

I looked at the web site, promptly checked out the cheese section and found my beloved Maytag Blue available there. It's available here too, but only at a very few selected grocery stores in the heavily trafficked areas of Houston. When we've driven through Cincinnati in the past it's always intrigued me. Maybe a visit to Cincinnati is in order. Chris in Pearland, TX who's never had Cincinnati chili IN Cincinnati or Dayton |

Skyline and Gold Star are both available frozen or canned although I've never tried it. I recommend the large 5 way (with beans and onions) and a cheese coney dog all the way on the side. And don't forget to ask for a plastic bib as it can get messy. And Cincinnati chili is not twirled on a fork like one eats spaghetti, it is cut with a fork as one would eat a piece of pie. It was located between the English food section with the animated Robin Hood scene and the aquaculture area. They moved all the kitchen gadgets and small appliances into that area. |

Their selection of ethnic groceries and produce attracts people from many miles away. They seem to have far fewer samples now that they moved the cheese and deli section into the new building. They are usually sampling a number of wines for 10 cents each, so that can be a good reason to stop. We stop in nearly every weekend. Since there has been so much construction lately, the store changes from week to week. I can't wait until the winery is open and the monorail is operational. Have you been over to the Cincinnati Mills (formerly Forest Fair Mall)? We went there on Saturday. http://www.junglejims.com/ |

We usually go to the Anderson Township location. We ate there Sunday evening. The first thing I noticed is that they raised the prices. My SO ordered a spaghetti dinner and the salad was nasty - all brown and limp. When he sent it back the waitress offered to make a new one but he didn't want more of the same. She said that since it was included in the dinner that they couldn't take anything off the bill, but she could give us a salad to take home. We should have left, but he took the to-go salad. When we got home and looked at the salad it was worse than the one she gave us in the restaurant. They really screwed up our order the time before that and other customers had some major issues - I though there was going to be a fist fight between a manager and a guest! We don't even bother with the location in our neighborhood because there is so much cigarette smoke you can hardly breath. I find that interesting because the Hyde Park location is all non-smoking. |

Lot's of garlic and all fresh ingredients. I grew up with the LaRosa's and had their pizza a million times. Too sweet for me. They add lot's of sugar to their sauce. Buddy LaRosa backed Aaron Pryor and Tommy..(oh what's his name) Ayers. That's it Ayers in the boxing arena. Last I saw of Pryor, he was pan handling down town. A guy that made millions per fight, lost all to crack cocaine. LaRosa's is now redoing most of their restaurants and serving liquor. They figure bar business is the key to growth. They could always sell wine with a D2 license, but didn't advertise it. -- StocksRus® |

I asked for one of the more obscure things I haven't been able to find in my area for a while--tongue loaf. They _only_ had two kinds. They deli guy said he could get another one if necessary. The weird juxtapositions were the most attractive part. For instance, to choose a random one--there was this big case full of, if I recall correctly, "international meats." There was a number of different duck products, quail, goose, etc--and a huge-ass block of frozen chitlens. I'm not sure I couldn't find anything they had in the Minneapolis area, but I'm absolutely sure I'd be an old man before I found most of it. I've always loved ginger preserves. They had seven different brands--that I noticed. I stopped counting after twelve kinds of pickled herring. Geeze--I can't find that many in Minnesota. And I've *heard* of duck bacon before, but I've never seen it. I wish I hadn't had to fly back home, or I'd have gotten the hog's head for eight bucks, just because I've never had one before. The next time I go to Dayton I'm planning things so I can go there just before I fly out.... If you're within an hour or two's drive, you owe it to yourself to drop by. Their web page fails to do them credit. I expected something like a slightly warped Costco. Instead it's . . . . unlike anyplace else I've ever shopped at. One of the most inexplicable features is that they still have sales on Charmin and other prosaic grocery-store items. I really doubt that's why most people go there, but I'm not complaining. We were there two hours and only saw the deli and the international foods area. Mike Beede |
