Finally, real BBQ in the land of the concentrated sun.
I just found out that Famous Dave's (about a 7.5 on the Real Texas BBQ quality scale, where Sonny Bryan's is a 9.5, El Paso BBQ is a 4, and Dickie's is a 2) is opening a restaurant on the south side of the Chandler Fashion Square mall. Okay, it's a few miles away from the Phoenix border, but it's only a few miles away from me, so now all I need is to start riding my bike 40 miles a day to make up for all the pork I'll be inhaling over the next several years. --Blair "Pass the napkins, willya?" |

Why are you so excited about it? Where else have you eaten it? Dave Anderson (head of the BIA) started the chain here and they're all over the place here. Not bad, I guess, but we prefer the dry-smoked ribs at the Market BBQ in downtown Minneapolis. Dave's quite the entrepreneur, though -- gotta give him that. -- -Barb, <www.jamlady.eboard.com> An update on 8/22/04; check the Fairs Fare tab. |

I'm around "here" too, and Market BBQ surely tops Dave's for ribs (for me). Dave's is ok, but maybe not quite right for serious eaters. Good experience, nice bar, some of them have entertainment, but... not-quite-there, foodwise. Pickled Parrot, though... love the spice, my favorite. Wish they hadn't moved far away from me. Been wanting to try Ted Cook's. Sure doesn't look like much, but I've heard good reports. (Storefront with a counter and maybe a bench... shabby street). I always get a kick out of a meal at Lee & Dee's... kids bringing out the food sometimes... family atmosphere, good catfish, cornbread. Ribs "good." Two booths (you could probably stuff six people in each), takeout is popular. -- Jack |

It would be about a 7.5 if it was in Dallas. There are many places there which kick Dave's ass. One trick is to mix the hot and texas-style sauces together. This trick also works at El Paso BBQ, but there you're talking about making a half-decent sauce to cover a half-slab of radial tire. At least Dave's knows how to put almost a full smoke on a bone. --Blair "Chewing and ribs don't mix." |

It'll be interesting to see how it does in PHX. When he announced his expansion plans sometime back, I recall some public (stock analysts?) speculation about his success in other parts of the country -- where barbecue means different things to different folks. We ate at the original place in Mpls many years ago and I was put off by the "theme" decor and setting -- an overturned trash can lid for the bones - something like that. I'm not a fan of contrived ambiance. I want a seedy setting that's honest!! :-) Mind, I don't DISlike Dave's ribs; I just like the Market Barbecue better. I WANT to chew. :-) And when we do get ribs from Dave's (there's one about two miles from us), we usually get take-out. :-) > --Blair > "Chewing and ribs don't mix." -- -Barb, <www.jamlady.eboard.com> An update on 8/22/04; check the Fairs Fare tab. |

On Food Network, Bobby Flay shills his "Boy Meets Grill" show by mentioning that they're going to all the great BBQ capitals. Nevermind that BBQ is defined differently all over. Texas -- sure. Kansas City I can understand. Memphis, I get. But Miami? When did Miami become a BBQ capital? sd |

Gotta guy named Vern Tate here in Fargo with a little strip mall place
called Ribs West. It's strictly walk up counter and formica, but you can get beer and the food is really good. Vern used to have a wagon type place here that he ran from a downtown parking lot in summers for several years. The a few years ago he finally packed up his family and moved them to this frozen wasteland full time. I think he really did his research to see if BBQ would "go" with these Norwegians (Catsup? A little too spicy for me.) Vern won his first Rib Fest here. Then the year before last we got a Famous Daves with a walloping ad budget. Ribs West didn't get "invited" to Rib Fest. The town exploded (partially because Vern is African American and it really looked stinky.) The powers that be changed their minds and invited Vern. He beat the crap out of Famous Daves. Now he has volunteers who staff his booth so he can float between the fest and his restaurant. He teaches classes in BBQ too! I just wish he'd give me his coleslaw dressing recepie - it's pink and sweet and has a real kick. Lynn from Fargo PS - you will be able to buy Famous Daves sauces, rubs, marinades etc. in your supermarkets They market heavily. Don't buy the "Wilber" beans (frozen) - mine are better and I just doctor Bush's canned. |

And don't miss my pixels. They're nothing short of spectacular! <fluttering lashes> Crash made pulled pork a couple of years ago, but we've been so busy moving, then trying to get organized and unpacked, that it's been hard for him to find the time this year. He's making smoked salmon this afternoon, though. Disregarding the state of total disaster throughout the house, we hosted a cook-in in July (which was actually run by Hag, the mistress of organization). My job, besides greeting people, was to stay the hell out of the way. <G> Whatever is outside today, I'm very allergic to it. By dode batches by barood shird. I just stop in, via Google, from time to time, but It's nice to be welcomed by a smiling face. BTW, was the mystery ever cleared up concerning whether you're Ms. Goomba or Mr. Goomba? I always thought you were a Girl Goomba. Carol |

Ignore the other Goombawannabes. I've had some glitches in the recent past with comcast and when I returned online and to RFC after a few weeks off I saw there was some ****** using my (gasp!) handle here. A deja search reveals him to be a total newbie under that handle. He top posts annoyingly so that is one clue it's not me. But we all know.. there is only ONE Damsel in dis Dress ![]() Goomba |
