Default Violet Oon's cookbook

I saw a program on FoodTV (Sara's Secrets) with guest Violet Oon preparing
recipes from her new cookbook "Singapore Family Cookbook." I'm trying to
locate a copy of this cookbook but can't find it anywhere. I've checked
Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Jessica's Biscuit, and Books for Cooks with no
luck. Has anyone seen this book?

Thanks to Reg and Ariane for their replies. Unfortunately it would cost
U.S.$26 to ship the book from Singapore (which is more than the cost of the
book) so I'll need to keep looking.

Ouch. FWIW, their FAQ says that you can e-mail them and
request the price of surface (vs. airmail) which will be cheaper, but
a lot slower. Good luck on your search, it sounds like a neat cookbook.

I've never seen Violet Oon's books available outside Singapore (I was lucky
to be able to buy some there). I don't know if you've already tried, but
perhaps the people at FoodTV could give you information.

FWIW, I don't think the cookbook is new. I found references to it as far
back as 1999. But maybe it will be published for the first time in the US?

Hmmm, sounds like time to see if you know anyone that knows someone in
the Pacific fleet that may make a port call at Singapore - or a business
person heading there for a trip. Did the Navy bit once about 20 years
ago, works fine.

Yes to the food tour!!!!! Singapore is my favourite food country in the
world--even beating out Thailand (and I'm half Thai). I was only in
Singapore for 4 days but I think I gained about 10 pounds. All I really did
there was eat and buy fabric (very well-priced sari fabric can be found
there). The sightseeing there sort of sucks and there's no real beach to
speak of so eating is all there is!

One of the great things about Singapore is the variety of food you can get
there. Little India is full of Indian food stalls and restaurants, while
you can get excellent Chinese food all over the city (including Chinatown,
of course). Then there's the Nonya/Peranakan food, all the other Asian
food, European-style food, etc., etc.

If you do go, I highly, highly recommend Tien Tien at the Maxwell Street
hawker stalls. They have Hainanese chicken and rice that is excellent, and
you can't visit Singapore without having Hainanese chicken and rice.
Another stall at the food court has freshly fried you taio (sp? Chinese
long donuts) for just pennies (or at least it was pennies in 1999). I also
had the best gulab jamun and jilebi I'd ever had from a place in Little
India. It was so good I called my mother from Singapore to tell her about
it.

I was planning a trip there last April but we would have been there while
SARS was in full swing. I was so very disappointed since our trip would
have coincided with the Singapore Food Festival :-(. I'm planning a trip
there next Christmas, though :-). I dream of the food there, often, and am
longing to return!

For more Singapore food information, www.makantime.com is an excellent
resource, though it can be difficult to get through all the recommendations.
www.makansutra.com is also an excellent place for food information, and the
people on the board (Lor Sor is the link for the discussion boards) really
know their stuff. You can also get some good information from e-Gullet. A
former FoodTV personality highly recommends SIN HUAT Eating House in
Geylang. From what I've seen of the guy's show, he knows his food (and he
like Tien Tien, too:-)). For an excellent (am I using that word too much?)

I'm not Rona, but I wouldn't pass up at least a quick trip to
Singapore for the food. Alas, we didn't make it there on this past
summer's trip to Malaysia. BTW, I wouldn't pass up Malaysia for great
eats, either. My Malaysian relatives claim the food is much better
than Singapore and cheaper, but that's what you'd expect them to say!
Seriously, just about everything I ate during a three week stay
(Kuala Lumpua, Cameron Highlands, Ipoh, Melacca, Penang, Langkawi) was
excellent. Best meal, however, was in Ipoh, which isn't really much
of a tourist town. I think it'd be hard to go wrong choosing a decent
food court and seeing what the locals are eating.

Have fun on your trip, and I too, would love to see a trip
report when you're through!

Rona, thanks for this. I sent a copy to my son, who leaves today for
his fourth business trip to Singapore. He usually eats either street
vendor food or wherever his Singapore associates take him. After going
through your information, he says he'll try to get to the Sin Huat
Eating House this trip.

He asked if I'd like anything from Singapore, so I asked him to bring
me some street food!

I *adore* gulab jamun!! There's a little Indian restaurant
semi-nearby that serves it. Mmmmmmmmmm. And I just love the
rosewater syrup that's ladled over it.

Aside from the chicken dish, - the fish: oh, my the fish is the best. Make
sure you drive out (by taxi) to the restaurants along the beach for the fish
dishes and scenery. But most of all, what I thing I really like about
eating outside in Singapore in their little courts and stalls is that
Singapore has NO flies! and they are continuously washing down their
stalls, their floors, etc.

PS, if you are into oriental art, shopping for art supplies is great, too.
