Man o day. If they're going to arrest New York city folks for being rude
and abrasive they can start with every cab driver in the city.

I got a ride from a New York City cabby who was very nice. It was the end
of his shift, and I wanted him to drop me about a block from his house.

I wish they would eliminate this practice in the U.S. A gratuity is by
definition *voluntary*. This reminds me of a required "donation" that many
organizations ask for.

Restaurants should pay their waitstaff what they're worth and not rely on
the public to do it for them. If not, the "gratuity" should be renamed a
service charge or something like "labor for services rendered" and the
proper education be done to the public at large. Then if the customer wishes
to tip in addition to that, then it's between the customer and the
waitstaff.

I think a reform would be better for everyone, and would reduce the possible
animosity between waitstaff and customers, and place it where it needs to
be. It would be better for all concerned. This business of not paying
waitstaff even minimum wage in some cases and relying on tips for their
income is bad for all concerned.

I agree......
Fully.

By requiring a mandatory tip, you may be being forced to pay for bad
service!

There oughta be a law or something.

And yes, waitstaff SHOULD be making at least minimum wage.....

http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/q-a.htm

An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 an hour in
direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equals at least the
federal minimum wage [of $5.15] , the employee retains all tips and the
employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips.
If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least
$2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer
must make up the difference.

except in Alaska where the minimum wage is $7.15, even for tipped employees.
and just about all restaurants up here tax you on 8% of all sales. if you
don't claim enough then it goes to the allocated tips which the company does
for you and then you just have to hope that they don't screw you.

the MAJOR issue in restaurants is not so much the tax procedures but
management who go in and change your hours to less than what you worked in
order to get their bonus!

stuart anderson is FAMOUS for this!!!

I did check it out. There did seem to be anything there that hadn't been in
the previous article. All of the articles seemed to say the same thing.
