I did the Google search. I read about the various concoctions.
I can't imagine putting some of those horrible mixtures into my achy stomach. Anyone with a tried and true (and somewhat non-repulsive) recipe? ty Mia "A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -Rudyard Kipling Mr. Kipling, I beg to differ. |

See below: http://www.all-about-hangovers.com/html/biology.html Dimitri When you (anyone) consumes too much alcohol several things happen: Pesky toxins are the culprits responsible for you feeling like a regurgitated hairball following an innocent night of revelry. So, is it possible to avoid them? It would be a great strategy, but the fact is, the exact origin of the toxins is unknown. They may be present in the alcoholic beverage itself, or get created as a metabolic by-product by the body in some fashion, or some combination of the two. In addition to toxins, dehydration also contributes to the symptoms and physiological events you experience with a hangover. Your kidneys and liver require water to dilute and process the toxins. When you drink alcohol, your body actually requires more water than usual in order to perform this function efficiently. If water and fluids are not readily available to aid in this detoxification process, the body will redistribute what water is available. All parts of the body are impacted by this redistribution of fluid..even the brain. And you wonder why your head hurts!! Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which means that it increases the release of urine from the body. As you are drinking alcoholic beverages, your body is actually losing fluids. By losing more fluids than usual, you are also losing important vitamins and nutrients. Do we need to mention the additional fluid and nutrient loss that occurs if you also experience vomiting? We didn't think so. The enzyme 'alcohol dehydrogenase' (ADH) is responsible for breaking down the alcohol in the liver. The tolerance that habitual drinkers build to alcohol is due to increased levels of ADH. Some research suggests that men tend to have more of this enzyme than women, and as a result can usually drink more than women of equal weight. For some reason, peoples of Asian decent reportedly produce less of the enzyme as well. (All in all, a rather dubious distinction for the Caucasian male.) The toxins involved in a hangover: Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) Produced naturally during fermentation (the making of alcohol). By-products of metabolism When the liver breaks down the alcohol, enzymes produce a by-product called acetaldehyde. This highly toxic substance enters the system and can make you feel extremely ill. Congeners These are by-products of the alcohol fermentation and distillation process and are present in the drink itself. The level of congeners help explain why certain drinks give you a worse hangover than others. Visit our congeners page to learn more. |

Stay hydrated while you drink -- alternate water and alcohol. This helps
prevent dehydration and counteracts the diuretic effects of the alcohol. I find that tomato soup or products like Spaghetti-Os that have a tomato base without too much starch help the morning after. Also, as much as I love Jack and Coke, it is best to avoid mixing alcohol and caffiene. They are both diuretics, and dehydrate you even faster than either one by itself. -- John Gaughan http://www.johngaughan.net/ |

The majority of a hangover is simply dehydration. Drink as much water as you can before going to bed and have a glass ready for when you wake up. Other than that, simple nutrition is the answer. All your vitamins and electrolytes were literaly ****ed away in your evening of rampant bacchanalianism. Try orange juice and a good breakfast. One of those "complete" vitamins (like Centrum) would help. Greasy cheeseburgers seem to work for me, but that certainly isn't what a doctor would recommend. But mostly it is dehydration, get some water into your system and start feeling better. Dean G. |

Water yourself thouroughly before after and during drinking, and presto! no hangover. Cure for bad wine is harder, however. (don't drink wine that's been left at room temperature for a month... it really isn't potable.) Lena |

Sub-lingual vitamin B-12. Twinlabs makes B-12 dots. Stick some under your tongue both before and after you drink. :-) Works fast too. Go to Sun Harvest or GNC to get them, or the twinlabs website. Orange Juice for its Vit C *plus* Eggs for (some form of, can't remember) cysteine are proven remedies. Otherwise, champagne is the first thing that an upset stomach will tolerate and actually does ameliorate many of the "run over by a truck" symptoms of a hangover. Analgesics: APC's (of military fame) were perfect! All ingredients have now been blacklisted by the pharmies who couldn't make any money from them, so if the pale substitutes work for you, it is more good luck than good management. -Mabry- |

The product I recommend is this one: http://www.superiortrading.com/share... eriortrading I have no commercial interest in the product or its importer -- my only relationship to them is as a satisfied customer. I would say that about 1/3 of the contents of the jar in the box are about enough for one hangover. (Ignore the instructions on the label which suggest a much smaller dosage.) |

If I can remember to do so, it is a big glass of broth or dissolved
bullion cubes. This one hydrates and secondarily the sodium helps your body retail water. Also, mix in as much water as possible over the course of the night or as soon as you wakeup, two naproxen with as much water as you can stand. Evan |

While I'd not recommend them as a total diet, one or two shakes per day can really boost energy levels and nutritional balance... especially in those compromised. I'm not impressed with Boost or Ensure! Too high in simple sugars and not NEARLY high enough in protien! Lynn, a close friend of mine, has very bad teeth and a LOT of stress! She's been getting downright emaciated (and anorexic) lately, and is tired all the time. :-( Not good. She has a 2 year old and a 4 year old to keep up after, but complains she just has no appetite. <sigh> I bought her a box of chocolate Met-Rx and told her to drink 1 or 2 packets per day with WHOLE milk as she needed the calories! The difference in just a couple of days was miraculous! I need to get her another box. :-) K. -- >,,<Cat's Haven Hobby >,,< http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...user id=katra |

The alcohol is the drug. I only got seriously drunk once when I was away on vacation with friends and we did some bar hopping. After I passed out and my buddies carried me back to our hotel room, I woke up the next morning to find myself with a selection of furniture piled up on top of me, including a coffee table. I woke up completely free of any ill effects the next morning, but I needed help getting that damned furniture off me! |
