Default Birthday Dinner - yum, yum, yum

What's your favorite Birthday Dinner? Do you even celebrate with a
Birthdays with a special dinner?

This is a tradition we've had in my family forever - DH and I started
doing them when we got married.

DH turned 47 this week and DS turned 8 months on the same day.
Tonight I cooked DH's BD Dinner...

Shrimp coctail with my version of coctail sauce
roasted Cornish game hens with onions, garlic and rosemary (with
gravy)
parslied potatoes (boring but he loves them...)
steamed fresh broccoli and carrots (ditto)
cornbred
Strawberry/apple/rhubarb/blackberry/blueberry pie (superb!)
apple pie with crumb topping
vanilla bean ice cream (homemade of course!)
Cascade Ale

DS celebrated with parslied potatoes, carrots and soy milk. He
tried the broccoli and decided I was trying to poison him.

My favorite BD dinner is homemade mushroom, black olive and spinach
pizza. Unfortunately, I'm the one who has to make it. My second
runner-up is asparagus and mushroom fajitas with spanish rice, pintos,
chips, salsa and guac. Margies and/or mojitos are a must!

That sounds yummy, Lyn! Happy Belated Birthday to your DH and DS!

Prior to DD's arrival, DH and I had always treated each other to a
nice dinner out on our birthdays. (The restaurant was always chosen by
the one treating and was always a surprise--even while en route to the
place.) Now, we're much more likely to make each other a nice dinner
at home (although we did get a babysitter for my last birthday, and DH
took me out for a very nice dinner at a new place that had just opened
up). With the exception of manning the smoker and grill, DH doesn't
cook much at all. He can prepare a mean steak dinner, though, so
that's what I usually get (no complaints from me, however!).

Our anniversary was this past week, and he prepared a great (steak, of
course) dinner. Porterhouse steaks, grilled to perfection, with
sauteed mushrooms and a variety of delicious sides (already prepared,
from Central Market, but who cares). Dessert was individual bread
puddings (also from CM) topped with vanilla Blue Bell ice cream.

His birthday is this Thursday, and I'm either going to make stromboli
(his favorite), with salad, or something fancier, like Beef
Wellington, with twice-baked potatoes, veggies, and salad. Dessert
will be strawberry-rhubarb pie (his favorite dessert).

How do you make them? I haven't had one in years.

I almost always cook my own birthday dinner so I can have
exactly what I want made the way I like it. I sometimes
also go out for dinner as a birthday treat but that's not
my official birthday dinner. Sometimes, if she volunteers,
I let my aunt make me a birthday dinner as long as I get
to decide what she makes. She does a number of things I'm
very fond of and that I don't make myself. One is moussaka.
So if I feel like Greek food I let her do it. Yum.
But I don't have any one thing I always have. It depends on
what I've been craving. Or some new dish I've been wanting
to try but is too much work to make for just myself. Of course
I always invite friends and family.

I have absolutely no desire to cook my own birthday dinner since, IMO,
it ceases to be a treat. Although I will admit to cooking special meals
(other than for my birthday) simply because I like what I cook. The
only exception is my own birthday dessert (apart from the one I have at
the restaurant), which is either a Black Forest Cake or one of my
favorite pies. Reason? I can make it better.
