Just to clarify: they contain malted milk, not malt (extract).

Just to clarify: they have malt powder added, the only difference from a
milk shake. Now the shake and malt may have flavor added as well.

Original question: YES, a blinder will do.

Wouldn't malt extract work? (unhopped, of course)

A blinder probably won't do much of anything except keep you from seeing
it. :-) A blender is a substitute for a malt mixer, but the results
are definitely not the same.

The one I have works as good if not better. It is one that will make
smoothies as well and much higher speed and variable better than an
ordinary machine, but it is still just a blinder, it is an Oster.

I can't argue that you have a good blender. I have a vintage Osterizer
that has 14 speeds that I bought in the late 1960s, and it shows no
signs of ever quitting. I use it for many things.

Having said that, a spindle-style malt mixer was made for just one
purpose, and I still think it does it better than any other appliance.

Well, yes, they really do. Waffle House uses them to whip the egg
mixture for their omelettes. I've never tried it myself, but I probably
should. Thanks for reminding me!

yes, but the taste would be somewhat different (I've experimented with

When I get to that ripe old age, no one better tell me what the hell I
can or cannot buy with my own money.

Why has nobody mentioned Ovaltine?

It comes in regular and chocolate flavor and I see it in regular
grocery stores.

My dad suddenly had to have the flavor from his childhood about 3
years ago. He still drinks a glass a day.

U-Bet! You have no idea how my relatives wailed over my spending more than
$50,000 for a tractor just to mow lawn. And guess what, I just spent another
$135,000 for 90 acres more just so I can mow more... hey, my tractor has a CD
player and at my age I gotta do a lotta catching up on tunes... now I'm
thinking Bigger Tractor! Hey, but it's my dollars, and I don't really give a
rat's b-hind that they carp over all the gallons of diesel I burn... yup, they
bitch over that too.
Whew, I'm beat, just came in from clearing out dead trees with my top of the
line Jonsered chain saw. Yeah, they don't like my $600 chain saw either. ****
em! Yoose hoid me. **** EM!

**** EM!

I think he should go out and buy that machine for his Dad and hope he
lives to be 72 so his children can do the same for him.

I have one elderly parent and I consider myself lucky that he's still around.

Maybe this would be a good gift to buy for him for the upcoming holidays.
Yeah, I'm sure you could get it for cheaper.

My parents were the type who stored everything of mine, and for all I know, my
childhood writings are still up in the attic somewhere. When we had no jobs
and had to leave Michigan, they put my husband up while he closed house there
and I'm sure lots of my newlywed things are still there, cookbooks, utensils,
etc. They never complained, even when my oldest brother kept a grand piano in
the garage for years, and of course it was ruined by the weather. He would
probably say now that they damaged his piano.

I have a brother who has begrudged everything that Dad has spent to keep the
house up over the years, saying that Dad pays too much and blah blah blah.
Well, I think that Dad earned that money, right? My mother sent lots of money
to the 700 Club and other scummy "charities" and that sort of made me mad, as
she was so taken in by their lies.

The brother complained about treating Dad to dinner after my mother's funeral.
Dad had treated us to the luncheon earlier that day with good food and an open
bar. My husband and I had taken Dad out the day before and treated him to a
dinner, albeit at a much cheaper place but a place that my parents had
frequented often and when the owner saw him he greeted him . My brothers
didn't offer to take him out for a break druing that long day, over 8 hours at
the funeral home.

Okay, I had to rant and rant.

Others have answered your questions. Be glad you have a father.

Or vacuum cleaners. In the past 6 years my parents bought 5 from door to
door or telemarketers.

What are the odds you can take charge of their finances? If nothing
else, maybe their town doesn't permit that type of selling without
well ... a permit. Give them a call. If nothing else, hire them a
cleaner.

There. There's the problem folks. Sure, the OP's dad should be able
to do what he wants with his money, but there's a point where you have
to watch; lots of seniors lose perspective and bankrupt themselves
getting siding or roofing jobs they don't need, or applying to
sweepstakes, or other such nonsense. Guess who ends up paying for the
dialysis or Alzheimer's treatments or whatever, five years later? And
it's only going to get worse, as history's most self absorbed
generation goes into retirement. "Hey, it's our money, we're healthy
now, why shouldn't we?" Because I'm going to have to pay the bill
(again,) thankyouverymuch.

The malt machine is probably no big deal, but don't pile on the OP for
being concerned. Buying useless, overpriced crap is a warning sign.

Exactly my point. It's their money now, just wait until it's your
money supporting them at the expense of your own retirement savings
before passing judgement.

Being close to retirement, Ihave a hellova problem with my kids deciding what I
"need". I made my money and as long as I won't have to depend on them later
(which I won't), I'll spend it as I please. I've got good kids, but sometimes
wonder if there'd be the same interest if all of my estate were going to a
charity and they wouldn't get any!

Don't you have a will? Leave your estate to the deserving and needy, not the
unappreciative and greedy.
