Default I love Penzeys!

Just thought I'd share my latest order with you so that we can
both suffer the waiting for it to arrive. LOL

European Peppercorns
Bavarian Seasoning
Bouquet Garni
Sate
Parisien Herbes

I am absolutely drooling with anticipation. I was going to order
the Bangkok Blend but decided to get the Sate, instead. Yes, I
know they aren't the same but they both have similar ingredients.
Unfortunately I was over-cilantro'd about 2 years ago by some
silly person that put in too much cilantro in their black bean
soup. Therefore, I'm pretty much ruined where cilantro is
concerned and feel the need to avoid it. I can tolerate a little
bit of it... Anyway, the Sate doesn't have it and the Bangkok
does. Maybe next year I'll order one of the tiny jars of it and
see how it goes.

Anybody out there familiar with "galangal"? Per Penzeys, it's "A
close relative of ginger, galangal (aka Laos powder) is used in
Indonesia and SE Asia, especially Thailand. The flavor is
similar to ginger but flowery and intense. Use to season curries
and soups, for grilling chicken or fish kabobs. From Thailand".
The name "Laos powder" actually did sound familiar and I'm
guessing that I have had it in an entree before - but just didn't
know it. It sounds divine! I wonder how it would handle being
candied, like how I enjoy ginger. I may have to check to see if
I can even get it and try it. Penzeys only showed it being sold
ground and/or combined in blends.

After receiving my last order, Nathan and I (4 y/o charming
monster {him, not me}), stood in the kitchen devouring the
Northwoods blend and the Sunny Paris - out of our hands. Oh my
stars those two are awesome!! The shallots in the Sunny Paris
could not BE any sweeter and delicious.

I was going to order the Pasta Sprinkle too but the Frug in me
said that I could blend my own. But then again, I don't have any
French basil... No. I'm going to be good. Besides, I still
have a little bit of the Sprinkle left thanks to Nancy (Waving to
Nancy while remembering opening that beautiful package of Oregano
she sent with the bottle of Pasta Sprinkle!!!) ! The aroma from
that oregano was nothing short of spectacular. Pure perfection.

While I can get supposedly fresh herbs/spices from a semi-local
health food store... theirs just doesn't compare to Penzeys'.

Being that I get nothing for recommending Penzeys (other than the
satisfaction that somebody else is going to be as pleased as
everyone else here that orders from them...) I'm telling ya, if
you've been thinking about ordering from them but just haven't
gotten around to it yet... DO IT! They rock!

BTW, in case you missed it (from their catalog or the web site)
Bill and his wife (Penzey) had a little girl last month.
Theodora Lee Penzey ("Teddi").

I opened my first packet of Penzeys galangal a few nights ago to add
to some chicken soup. I like it, but can't think of much to add to
Penzeys own description. I'd like to find some galangal root to grow
so I can compare the real thing to the ginger root from my garden.

Very cool idea. I'll look around and see if I can find some

I just found this via Google:

They're selling a 1# root for $ 16.00 . Of course, I don't know
for sure if you could "root" it and get it to grow...?

I was just there this morning, Cyndi!
One of my RFC friends will be passing through on his way to the Boston area
next Sunday and he's stopping here for a visit and lunch at the local
pizzaria. He asked me to pick up a bottle of Sunny Paris for him, so since
it was a nice day (seasonably cold, but sunny, bright and about 20 degrees
warmer than it was the past few days.) I decided to take a drive.

I picked up the SP for our friend, and bought myself a few things.

I get the small jars of things the first time I buy them, because they fit
in my spice chest. Thereafter, for refills, I buy the bags and store in a
cool dark place. Here's what I bought:

- Bag of dehydrated minched garlic

- bag of dehydrated celery

- small jar of seasoned salt (just to try)

- small jar of ozark seasoning (when I sprinkled some on my finger from the
sniffing jar, i thought it tasted like the colonel's 11 herbs and
spices....and immediately imagined fried chicken fingers for supper
tonight!)

- Parisian Bonnes herbes (why get just chives when for a dime more, you can
kick them up a notch with the other herbs? smile) This is one of my favorite
blends.

Cyndi, the Bavarian is one of my absolute favorite blends!!!! It is
wonderful on pork chops or roasts. I have also used it on lamb, with
additional garlic. And Bouquet Garni is probably second only to Sunny Paris,
as far as my favorites go. It is especially good on roasted carrots,
believe it or not, and it is perfect in any chicken recipe!

The other night, I made a stew of chicken with carrots and celery (really,
it was probably just a thick soup) and then very wide noodles, sort of my
own take on southern chicken and dumplings--and I added a healthy sprinkle
of both the Bouquet Garni and their Poultry seasoning and it was SO
delicious!

Sunny Paris is very special. Try it mixed into sour cream as a topping for
baked potatoes or a dip for raw veggies! Or used as the herbs in a creamy
salad dressing recipe. It really goes nicely with dairy products, like cream
cheese for canapes.

The only advantage to getting them at the health food store is if you can
buy them in "bulk", that is, just the quantity you desire....so if you don't
know if you'd like, say, summer savory, you can buy a tablespoon of it, and
they charge by the weight. Then, I can see doing it. Otherwise, for my
money, it's Penzey's all the way.

And shopping there is such a pleasant experience. I've become a regular
there and the clerks and the manager always greet me warmly.

There's just no comparison to buying seasonings elsewhere. The quality is
better, the prices are lower and the people are wonderful. It's exactly the
sort of company I want to patronize.

I am drooling with anticipation of going into one of their stores on
my way home to California. Whatever route I take, I will manage to go
through a town where they have a store. I am planning to spend a
hefty bundle in replenishing my spice/herb pantry. And I am leaving
room for all of this in the car!

Yeah, and add to that the shipping costs, and it might be an expensive
gamble. I've had good luck growing ginger from roots I bought at the
supermarket, so I think I'll look around for some fresh galangal at
the few Asian groceries I know about here in San Antonio.
Thanks, Cyndi.

Oh my, Penzey's Sweet Basil from France is to ordinary basil as the NY
Philharmonic is to tissue paper and a comb.
Fox Point can be eaten with a spoon. And don't get me started on the
curries. I got some of the "sweet curry" and the expensive
"Maharajah". I cook with the sweet curry and I wear the Maharajah
stuff behind my ears!

*** I am soooo jealous! Man, to be able to just driver over to
a local Penzeys!
Weatherwise we're in the yucky teens again with icky gusty winds
around 23 mph. We're supposed to back up to 30 by Friday.

*** Did you get *just* seasoned salt or the newer "4S" ?
I'll have to try the Ozark Seasoning next time. I noticed in
their description that it doesn't say what the "spices and herbs"
are...! Maybe it *really* is the Colonel's secret! LOL

- Parisian Bonnes herbes (why get just chives when for a dime
more, you can
kick them up a notch with the other herbs? smile) This is one of
my favorite
blends.

*** It sounds like a very delicious blend. My first impression
(since I like to *taste* flavors in my head as I read them) was
that it will probably have a pleasant *green* flavor. That's how
I associate the flavor of tarragon and chervil.

Cyndi, the Bavarian is one of my absolute favorite blends!!!! It

*** I'm really looking forward to trying the Bavarian. The
Bouquet Garni sounded as though it would be the perfect thing to
use, especially when I can't (or won't pay the $$) get fresh
herbs to throw into pots of things that require some of my
favorite herbs. Sunny Paris ROCKS!!! I swear between that and
the Northwoods... YUMM!

The other night, I made a stew of chicken with carrots and

it was probably just a thick soup) and then very wide noodles,

***Yeah. That and being able to get it immediately (since I
don't live near one of those heavenly stores!). Hmm, I also only
spend about $0.50 on fuel and not a couple of bucks on
shipping... Pros and cons. But the health food store DEFINITELY
doesn't have the terrific blends that Penzeys offers. Which is
obviously why I've become such a fan of theirs.

And shopping there is such a pleasant experience. I've become a
regular
there and the clerks and the manager always greet me warmly.

*** I can imagine that. I was blown away when I received my
first Penzeys package. There was a hand signed note in there
plus hand written thank yous on the packing slip! Totally
surprised me. The incredible aromas as items were opened...
oooohhhhhs, aaaaahhhhhhssss, mmmmmmmmmssss.... I was ever so
blissfully happy. While I know that my local health food store
carries a lot of the same items... it's just not the same. But
then again, I love receiving boxes of goodies in the mail... kind
of like Christmas any day of the year!

There's just no comparison to buying seasonings elsewhere. The
quality is
better, the prices are lower and the people are wonderful. It's

***Yep. So far, they've pretty much beat out all of the others
that I've considered/have ordered from. There is one other site
(can't remember its name, though) that did have peppercorns for a
much lower price but they didn't have anywhere near the variety
of everything else that Penzeys offers; therefore, I'd rather
order everything from 1 source that I know and trust than trying
to get it from 2 or 3 different places (which means whatever
savings I would have saved would be transferred to the s/h costs
= no savings).

Yes, I agree that the above could/would be an expensive gamble.
My thoughts were that since there obviously are/is site(s) that
do sell it that our chances are improved at finding it and giving
it a go.

I'm getting a little excited about the possibility of finding
some and trying to grow it... Yay!

Yes. I too have become a giant fan of French Basil.

Philharmonic vs. tissue paper and a comb, indeed! That's funny.
Good comparison - but funny!

Yep - that added saffron will get you in the $$. That appears to
be the primary difference between the Maharajah and the Sweet
Curry... it also looks like the order/proportion of cardamom
might be a slight difference too... I'm looking forward to
receiving the Sate.

I can't recall the proper name of the candy but do you know the
kids candy that has the stick made of candy that is licked and
then dipped into powdered candy? Lic-a-stix...? I dunno. But my
thoughts were which of the Penzeys products would be great in an
adult version. My votes for today would be Northwoods, Sunny
Paris and maybe the Sate (not sure since I haven't had it YET).

The sticks were Lik-m-stix and the powdered stuff was Lik-m-aid (but they
were sold as a set). I was still eating them a few years ago, and I think
they're still available (at least in Canada). Grape's my favourite.

I believe they still sell them in a few places here in WA State too. I
loved the Lik-M-Stix as a kid; the stick was the best part... :-)

I've been thinking muchly about how nice it would have been to go to
Penzey's before I left for Japan. I'd have liked to have brought some of
their stuff with me. Unfortunately, my meeting was scheduled for Chicago
and though there was a Penzey's sort of nearby (in some suburb) it just
wasn't going to be do-able. However, I just learned that my meeting is no
longer going to be in Chicago, but in Minneapolis!! I'm bringing my mother
along for the ride (I think I'm driving) so I hope you have some free time
in March (we'll probably be there March 4-7).

Penzey's here I come again!!! And Al's, too!!

Oh, I have another pickle hat picture to send you...I'll get to it one of
these days!

I haven't been there since you and your mom visited. I could do that.
:-)

Penzeys is closed on Sundays. I'll mark my calendar. Remember what I
said about me driving? Still holds. You can buy lunch or dinner. :-)

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail;
a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn, that was fun!"

I remember! But I wasn't going to hold you to it. I feel bad when people
drive me all over the place. It's my Asian-"Don't inconvenience other
people"-ness. However, I say dinner at Mediterranean Cruise so we can all
belly dance!! Or lunch or dinner at El Burrito Mercado if you're in to
Mexican--think sd would join us? Or...Turkish? And of course we'll have
French pastries and cafe au lait at Patrick's (do they do coffee there?)!
Yum!

I have to admit, I was really looking forward to going to Chicago and I had
already planned my eating itinerary for that city. But Minneapolis is just
as good! I just have to plan a new itinerary!
