If you take or are taking Vioxx

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J., Sept. 30, 2004 - Merck &. Co., Inc. today
announced a voluntary worldwide withdrawal of VIOXX® (rofecoxib), its
arthritis and acute pain medication. The company's decision, which is
effective immediately, is based on new, three-year data from a prospective,
randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the APPROVe (Adenomatous
Polyp Prevention on VIOXX) trial.

My wife is in a flap over the Vioxx situation. She has been taking it for more than
four years and has found it the most beneficial medication for her arthritis. She
is in a state of denial, thinking her doctor can keep getting it for her, but I
tried to tell her that it has been taken off the market and simply will not be
available. And I doubt that her doctor will be a party to obtaining a source for it
when he has to deal with liability issues.

I think she needs to find a new med.

Interestingly, my cardiologist warned me against taking it
specifically when we discussed medications in general, back
in 1996.

I wasn't aware that Vioxx had been on the market that long. I used to
go to Mexico to get medications for my mother and I remember seeing
signs at the phamacies saying Vioxx is now here. It seemed like that
was about 4 years ago. Anyway, I guess a lot of medicines are capable
of some bad side effects. My ex wife almost died from a severe
reaction to Celebrex.

When our druggist called yesterday he told my wife that her prescription
dates back to 1999, and I remember her switching when my sister in law
told her about a new drug that was supposed to be terrific, so I get the
impression that is when it first became available.
