Default "The Beautiful" cookbooks -- why PNW?

I just checked eBay, thinking about selling some of mine, but the
prices are *quite* low. *Except* for the Pacific Northwest one. Why is
this one special?

Two possible reasons:

1. The book is overevaluated by the seller (or the others are being
undervalued by their sellers). It isn't the same person selling them
so each seller is free to set a bottom end they feel is fair. You
don't have to buy it.

2. The book is genuinely rare.

Actually, you should ask the seller this question.

No. I've been checking these listings for a couple of years now, and
the PNW one consistently goes for 2-3 times the amount for others in
the series. And I don't *want* to buy it. I just wondered why this one
volume was so sought after.

Possibly this is the answer.

I don't see a original post -- so,
What is "this one" you are speaking of?

Read it again. He writes, "Except for the _Pacific Northwest_ one. Why is
this _one_ so special?" "Pacific Northwest" is clearly the antecedent of
the pronoun "one."

Rona: And *I'm* accused of being picky. :-)

Dee, there is a series of oversized (14"x10" hardbound) cookbooks with
heaps of color photos and chat that have titles like "France: The
Beautiful Cookbook," "Italy: TBC," "Southwest: TBC," etc. List price
is about $50 each. They are gorgeous, but not too practical. They are
often listed on eBay with a starting price of $10, and the PNW volume
consistently sells for considerably more than France, Thailand,
Mexico, Asia, Texas, etc. I was curious about the difference.

Eeek. Just looked on Amazon. 'France' used price starts at $10; PNW at
$64!

What's the use of being an ESL teacher if I don't get to share my knowledge
:-)! Some habits are just difficult to get rid of...grammar is one of my
strongest teaching areas (but I really do try not to correct other people's
grammar because it's annoying as hell)!

rona (I know what's correct prescriptively but I, myself, don't always use
it)

Thanks for your kind explanation, Frogleg. I appreciate it.

Being an amateur member of the grammar police, I suggest giving up
television altogether and reading the local newspaper only after
sedation. Keep fighting the good fight! Maybe a cadre of ESL teachers
will be able to keep some of the principles alive in a new generation.

I cringe most at the use of reflexive pronouns without appropriate
antecendants. It's the worst crime, second only to using subject pronouns
when one should use object pronouns.

You might enjoy http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/w...examrecord.htm
.. It's a great site for those anal prescriptive types, and don't forget to
print out those citations! :-)

My most recent peeve is the use of "there's" when "there are
(there're)" is meant. This plague is growing.

I see they've updated. I got my first certificates several years ago,
but only remember 2 or 3 categories. A challange, indeed. :-) Thanks.
