I am secure enough with who and what I am that whatever *you* have to say about me (classwise, racewise, sexwise,...)makes no difference at all. I know there are so many who do care but I cannot understand why. I love Dr. Phil because he is one of those people that just doesn't care what you think of him. His response to people who say they are going to stop watching him is "use your remote control or off button". And, I also don't understand why it is okay for a black person to refer to another black person as a "nig*er" but don't let a white person say it. The women on The View call each other "bitches" all the time but I'll bet they would be offended if a strange man on the street called them one. Dolly Parton is so secure with herself that she calls herself "white trash" and says that there is no mistaking that that is what she is. I also don't understand all of the whiners on the "talk show circuit"....I will come unglued if I hear another fat person cry about how people in the grocery store scrutinize what is in her basket and out of the blue make comments to her about being fat. I am 51 years old and I am fat. I have never in my life been approached by a stranger and given unsolicited advise about my weight. If that did happen to me I would say something completely inappropriate and laugh. Then I would say something like "who are you? you must be famous and I just don't recognize you" then laugh some more. If anyone has scrutinized the contents of my basket I have never noticed it. End of rant...thank you. The Heap |

Honestly, I imagine that people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, etc., are the least likely to care what people think about them -- not that I am saying you are any of these things. My mother was doing some research on pioneer cooking for a cookbook she wrote about fifteen years ago, and came upon a similar recipe. (Not that they had ritz crackers in covered wagons, but pioneer women had to get inventive to keep everyone on their feet and moving west.) If I were sitting by a campfire in the middle of the cold wilderness, and there was nothing else to eat, this pie might taste pretty good. The catch is, I'd have to BE out in the middle of nowhere with few edible alternatives before it did. Melissa |

I did a google search and it attributes the saying (about evenly at a quick glance) to both of them. My favourite Mencken quote is: "Puritanism. The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." |

My father raised us with the credo of " It is none of your business what anyone else thinks of you. And mind your own goddamned business" (It is a rather 20th century attitude, he born in 1911 and I in 1955. ) To piggyback on the supermarkett thing, I remember once when this 10-year old or so was astonished to see a white woman with a cane and what were then some nasty scars from the attack on the Pentagon. I pointed out to the mother what the scars and cane were all about. I pointed out how rude her child was and the proper way to instill manners in a child. The mother said the child had been poor all her life and I had to understand that. Right, only people with money in the bank can be civilized and know how to mind their won business. They were 24-karat gold losers. ~~~Gina~~~ |

Surely it's their right to be astonished? I've been astonished at the rude, pushy behavior of some wealthy people who think the are better than other -- you know, the people who want everything NOW and on their terms and at a discount! Anyone in retail has experienced this. I don't understand what the disfigured woman's race had to do with the situation. How could you tell from looking at someone how they acquired scars? Did you have some expectation that a 10 year old would know why the woman was disfigured? |

The "my truck is a status >symbol" people... > My neighbor drives a brand new pick-up. Once in a while she'll pick up furniture or stuff in it. The electric window wasn't working on it and she wanted me to drive her to the dealer late at night so it would be worked on the next day, for her convenience. She has had many meals here but we have had none at her house. She recently put in a new kitchen addition to the tune of $50,000 and I was with her all the way - sort of felt like a pregnancy. I knew I'd never get a meal cooked in that new kitchen. Before Thanksgiving, she came in with a woman and her 4 kids to show them the instruments in our house and said that they were cleaning her house and then going out shopping for food for the Thanksgiving meal. This family was transplanted from the wilds of Ohio so my neighbor had to be their mentor. We weren't upset to not get an invitation to that meal. I sort of guess the Ohioan did all the work. The kitchen addition is long over with now and there is still a huge dumpster in her yard. She has worked with the phone company for years and fought to be able to wear shorts at work through her union. I should have told her if she hadn't been so fat she wouldn't have had that chafing and people wouldn't have had to see her in shorts. I'm very bad, but this is white trash to me. rharps.com |

It's a branding of people as "trash" simply
because they're so poor they have to re- sort to living in trailers (which are neces- sarily rather cramped quarters), rather than houses which they obviously can't afford... |

You're way off... For most, it doesn't have to do with where you live or what kind of food you can afford. It has to do with meeting several basic social norms, such as removing the trash from your home--whatever type of home that may be, using the toilet to go to the restroom--rather than the corner of the bedroom, and bathing/brushing of teeth. Assuming one is mentally sound, meeting those tasks aren't that hard.. I think I've just described "basic hygiene", but you get the point... I've only really met one family ever I would consider "white trash". They didn't take their trash out--instead, let it pile up in one room of their house. They didn't always use the toilet, but would sometimes go in the corner of a room... They didn't take baths and didn't brush their teeth--one bragged that it had been three years since they'd brushed their teeth. Sadly, these people knew better and just didn't want to put forth the effort... They were all mentally sound... they just didn't care. |
