Quite by accident I came across a book by Diane Mott Davidson a few
years ago and, intrigued by the title, read it. The story was quite enjoyable, but ohhhhh... the recipes! Each of her novels includes a dozen or so for dishes that are mentioned in the story line, and I've never made a recipe from one of her books that didn't garner rave reviews. Her cookie recipes are to die for! I've since learned there's an entire genre of culinary mysteries, with a number of different authors writing mysteries which involve cooking and food, all of whom include recipes in their novels, but IMO the story lines aren't very good and there are rarely more than a couple of recipes. But Davidson's books.....worth buying for the recipes alone, although they're a good read! Anyone here share my interest? |

Bob - I've read all of them except "Catering To Nobody," which was her
first. I couldn't find it in the library; I'll have to look on eBay. Chris - Funny, but I started one of the B&B mysteries and just couldn't get into it! (As I recall, they have just one recipe, at the very back.) But I do love a good mystery, and I'll look into the other authors you mentiond whom I haven't read yet - thanks for the suggestions. I agree, Marla is unrealistic - but I sure wish I had a rich friend like that, lol! "The Jerk" unfortunately is TOO realistic to me, from presonal experience. Goldy's son's name is Arch. Davidson is good, light reading, but the recipes.....oh my! I can't wait to try Shrimp On Wheels! My favorite cookies recipes are the Ice Capped Gingersnaps and the Canturbury Jumbles. In fact, one day I gave some of the latter to my PO clerk to thank him for fronting a couple bucks when I was short on cash when mailing a package. The next week when I went in, he asked me if I'd make an entire batch, and said he'd pay me. I now bake cookies for him every week! This week I might try the Chocolate Coma cookies. If anyone wants recipes for any of these, let me know and I'll post them. |

Love cozy mysteries and culinary ones tend to be cozy.
If you like Diane Mott Davidson, try: AUTHOR - SLEUTH, OCCUPATION Susan Wittig Albert - China Bayles, herbalist Joanna Carl - Lee McKinney, chocolatier Laura Childs - Theodosia Browning, tea shop owner Cleo Coyle - Carolyn Cosi, coffeehouse owner Nancy Fairbanks - Carolyn Blue, food writer Jerrilyn Farmer - Madeleine Bean, caterer Joanne Fluke - Hannah Swensen, baker Joanne Pence - Angie Malfi, freelance chef/caterer Lou Jane Temple - Heaven Lee, restauranteur Also, if you don't mind hard boiled, there are always food/cooking references in Robert Parker's Spenser series. Enjoy! |

More so in his earlier books which I could never read without getting up for a snack. I've always yearned to have Spenser prepare lunch for me. And I want access to his beer supply. Gabby |

I am not really interested in reading about perversion, cruelty, torture and sadism, and then some stuff about Italian food. I just couldn't get into them after reading Body Farm. About half of them came from a used book store (trade 2 for 1) and I think most of the rest of them are from yard sales. I need to check and see what I am missing and start looking again. -- Susan N. Another favorite is Philip (Phillip?) Craig's mystery series based on Martha's Vineyard. Just a few recipes in each, but lots of food description. This list is a good place to start. http://www.wakefieldlibrary.org/zraculinarymys.htm |
