Default Spoiled Sauerkraut

Today I was going to throw some pork and sauerkraut in the crock pot and let it
cook overnight. I bought two nice porkloins which were on sale, and two large
glass jars of kraut. After pouring the second jar of kraut into the crockpot,
I noticed an awful smell. Sure enough, the second jar of kraut was spoiled,
and by pouring it on top of the first jar I ruined that also.. I immediately
removed the porkloins, which were underneath the kraut and rinsed them off good
and threw them in the freezer until I could get some more kraut. I never knew
Sauerkraut could spoil.

The lesson to be learned from my experience is to always take a whiff of
whatever you've just opened before pouring it into whatever dish you're making.

Strange. I've never experienced that but anything can spoil I suppose.
We used to make 'kraut every year. The closest that I've found to
homemade is Silver Floss packaged in plastic bags.

I agree that the kraut in plastic bags that is usually found near the pork is
the best kraut to be found in a supermarket, but I didn't see it at the store I
was shopping at (Meijer) and I figured kraut in a jar would be better than
kraut in a can.

Got my vote there. That "stuff" in a can is just plain nasty! <blech!>

Quite a few years ago I was making the ever so humble hot dogs and
sauerkraut. I added caraway seeds to the hot dogs and sauerkraut. The
caraway seeds took on a life of their own and started to move. I had to
throw the whole thing away. Now of course when I add caraway seeds to
something I check them first to make sure they haven't sprouted (I guess
that's what happened?)
