Default Cabbage in the field

I love driving through Yuma and the Imperial Valley (They also have
Dillards ;-) during harvest time.

The air is filled with the scent of what is being harvested. Oh my
gosh, the Imperial Valley when onions are being harvested is a delight
to the senses.

Cabbage in the field. Just look at all that cole slaw.

Thew photo reminded me of when I lived in Wisconsin. There were a
couple of sauerkraut packing plants there and cabbage fields surrounded
them for what seemed like miles and miles.

Thanks for the memory boost!

Just out there for the first time a few months ago. I apparently was
there between crops because I drove by mile after mile of fields that
looked like they were just planted so there wasn't even a clue what was
growing.

We only have one growing season here and cabbage is a fairly common crop
here.

I could have spent a lot more time there. The rows of the different
colored lettuce was beautiful too.
Hmmm. Might use that as an excuse to make another trip to Yuma, then
we can eat at our friend's Mexican Restaurant. Yeah, that's it.

Sorry you missed it George. You'll just have to come out this way
again. Next time let me know and we'll meet you for lunch somewhere.

Years ago the farmers would put a sign up alongside the road telling
what was in the field. Haven't seen them do that for years though.

If someone is out there and I'm_that_curious, I'll stop and ask.
They've always been nice and answered questions.

I love driving around in California agricultural areas.

One of my strongest memories is driving down the coast (on the
5?) from LA to San Diego. In the area of Camp Pendleton the
smell of wild fennel was wonderful.

Strawberry fields have a wonderful odor, also.

Many times we have stopped the car to investigate what was
growing in the fields. The hardest to identify at a distance
was young celery. Garlic and artichokes were interesting to see
as are citrus, mango, and avocado groves with the fruit hanging
like Christmas ornaments.

Someplace, (can't remember whether CA or Iowa) the fences
actually had signs identifying the crop. Most of the area around
Iowa State (Ames) has the specific experimental crop information
(often corn, soy beans and sunflowers) on the fences. Interesting.

Seed companies supply those signs and give the farmers a break on price
for planting different varieties in the same field. They usually plant
a couple of sections of each type, then compare harvests at the end of
the season. Farmers get cheap seeds (sometimes free), the seed
companies get a lot of free test acreage. Works out well for everyone.

I love those.

Here in Illinois many fields are marked by the generic strain of the
crop planted there. To someone in the field that's a lot of
information. To me, I have trouble telling sorghum from corn and wheat
from oats until I am standing next to a plant. One of these signs could
identify the type of bean and I wouldn't know it from a soybean without
opening the pod.

So far I've never seen a sign that says "Llamas". I have seen one that
says "Alpacas". Okay, so with a sign I can tell those two types apart
without standing within biting range. ;^)

Well crumb, if I had remembered your comment about the "ocean" of
cabbage I would have gotten what you were referring to. And yes, I do
see the sea and the waves.
I thought you were talking about my living in San Diego and taking
pics in the desert. Dang I'm dense. ;-(

Right. The three feet (in your defective mind) of crack (i.e. white) you
have do not count as snow. The only green you see is marijuana, other
then the veggies you have in your fast food, and frozen tv dinners.
Shouldn't you be out on the nearest street corner earning more crack
money ugly crack whore?
