Hello? Concept of zero? Counting began today for the next decade.
After 12 months go by (at the *end* of the year), we'll put a 1 in the
1's place at 12 AM New Year's Day 2011. Look at a 24 hour clock to
know when AM begins and pick your nits with the boyz at GMT.

The first year certainly did begin at zero. Think of babies birthdays
and you'll understand it a little better. When they were born, they
were 0 years old, at the end of 12 months (base 12), they are *one*
year. Hours and minutes are base 60 and all begin with zero. Oh, and
check your math. 20 minus 10 isn't 11.

That old canard is completely irrelevant!! Babies' first year has nothing
to do with calendars!
You call the first year on the calendar YEAR 1!!!! Ergo, Year 10 is the END
of the decade!

I miss Moosie as well. And (a more recent loss) Leila. Where's
Margaret Suran? Is she well?

The overall quality of rfc posts has been diluted in the last few years
by flame wars and spam for designer knockoffs. I am, however, grateful
for the continued wise (and occasionally wiseguy) posts from Barb,
Christine, the Nancys, sf, Lynn from Fargo, George, Arri, Felice,
Gloria, TammyM, Serene, and Stan. (I know I'm missing others, and
apologize in advance.) I'm grateful to Ranee, who hosted a cook-in at
her former home in Gig Harbor shortly after we moved to Seattle. And
Chatty Cathy, for doing the rfc website. I've also been following
Sheldon's transition to gentleman farmer in the wilds of upstate NY.

And a final shout-out to the SO, who introduced me to rfc, and who
(occasionally) keeps me honest.

That's why I no longer know how to count or do simple math. I'm retired
now, but I spent 25 years working with computers. Many times you do
indeed start counting at zero.

Yes to your first part. If you want to mix arithmetic and counting,
watch out! If you count from 10 up to and including 20, you will count
11 numbers. If you line 20 apples up in a row, and start counting with
the tenth apple, you will hit eleven. If you remove ten apples from the
twenty, you will have ten left.

He had that name long before that stupid e-mail thing, and yes, he is alive
and well taking pictures of trains (for one thing). He left when most of
the posts started being off topic, and people seemed to reply to, and enjoy
all of the OT shit. Especially andy's (whatever)-of-the-day.
