The US pop scene in the 50's was fairly dire although you had some good artists like Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Nat 'King' Cole, etc. putting stuff out. Pretty much the consensus of why Ampop sucked so bad is a DIRTY two letter phrase: "Mitch Miller". As head of A&R at Columbia Records it's as if he single - handedly set out to *destroy* US pop music. He's been derided by everyone who recorded at Columbia at the time: Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Jo Stafford, Doris Day...he forced great artists to record the very worst sort of novelty tune pabulum. As Jo Stafford once said to an interviewer. "Have you ever heard my recording of _Underneath The Overpass_? You don't want to, it was Mitch Miller's idea...". Pretty much the nadir of this era was Mitch forcing Sinatra to put out the novelty ditty, _Mama Won't Bark_...with the sound effect of a *real* dog barking, lol. Rosemay Clooney HATE HATE HATED _Come On A My House_, that song ****ed her off until her death, mainly because for many it was considered the penultimate Clooney song, she was ALWAYS asked to sing it even in her later years. Another was when _The Woody Woodpecker_ song hit #1 and Frank was forced to perform it on the _Your Hit Parade_ radio show...there are million other examples of this pop chicanery, all largely the result of MITCH MILLER's EVIL (who BTW was a classically - trained oboist and in private he derided all the krap he put out). ==>> although I adore Woody Woodpecker -- Best Greg -- Best Greg |

I always love to watch the opening of the 1955 film _The Blackboard Jungle_ with Bill Haley and the Comets in the background - you think, "This is when it started to happen...". Just knocks me out... -- Best Greg |
