Perhaps not at all fitting your as yet unknown wants/needs, but I
spent over an hbour at BB&B on Saturday primarily shopping for next
seasons Christmas baking gift containers now on sale (or not). Things
like the 10x10x5" window top boxes I put cookies and breads in for
giving to friends; smaller containers for each of my Marines, etc.. I
also found a few kitchen items I know I will use and like, but things
I'd never put on an actual shopping list.

Just go, and go without an actual specific item purpose! Browse each
section to let something call out to you. Look around with an open
mind, find just that one Corningware-like dish in the perfect shape or
size you don't already have. Get a new set of perfect sized,
individual serving size soup bowls or a same type set of freezer
containers for single servings or leftovers. The store I went to had
good pricing on rolls of the Food Saver to-be-bags in different
widths, stock up if you use a FS sealer machine. Or get yourself
something you always put off buying. Like the things you always make
do with, rather than having a nicer, matching, one-purpose set of
something. Think of not a shoppping trip, but plan yourself a
sneaky trip just to search for surprises!

I bought my nitrous-oxide foamer there; I think it was around $40.

A pair of locking oxo tongs, I can't live without them. You can get
them with or without the nylon heads.

go thru your baking sheets and bakeware and toss whatever is old and
grungy looking and then replace them with shiny and new ones.

Do you bake? I'd get one of those silpat baking mats if I had a gift
certificate and the thought occurred to me when I shopped.

If you don't own one, the Oxo salad spinner. Love mine.

Or else put it toward a decent knife, or buy a lot of paring knives.
some nights, I swear I go thru three or four.
I think we could all use another cutting board, too.

Advantage of these baking mats?
Will they sub for parchment paper?

According to what I've garnered, yes.

I think I'd "treat" myself to something I wouldn't normally buy, even
if I had to add a little bit more money to it.

Well. . . I'd actually be looking for a couple Valentine-theme fingertip
towels for my bathrooms or some K-cups for my Keurig coffee brewer. And
it's almost time for me to get another cheap 10" non-stick skillet.

They're great on a flat sheet. I can fold parchment to line a 9x13 pan,
but you can't do that with one of the Silpat-type sheets. I like them.
Caveat. Don't think you can cut a pizza on one and not cut the mat.
Don't ask me how I'm so sure of that.

Oh lordy... So many choices!

Some plush bedding at this point would probably be my personal choice,
but they have some lovely scented candles and an overwhelming variety of
kitchen gadgetry. ;-)

Just go there and browse, and get whatever you think you cannot live
without...

Do you know up to what temp they can survive? Can they be used for our
artisan bread? (450F) I've been using parchment paper which ain't cheap
at the grocery store.

Maximum temperature for silpat is somewhere around 550 F. You can use it
for everything except broiling.

For parchment paper, don't buy the supermarket stuff. It's extremely
overpriced. Like by about 100 X.

I have a $25 box from a resto supply place. 1000 sheets, whole sheet
pan size. I cut them down the middle for use with half sheets.

You're most welcome.

Another downside of the supermarket stuff is that it comes in
rolls. Bad. It doesn't always lay flat, especially when you get to
the end of the roll.

You want the flat individual sheets. The only downside there is
the box they come in is pretty bulky.

Default Thanks folks; was BB&B - what to buy? $25 gift card ;)

Thanks for all the fantastic suggestions, folks. I went to BB&B this
afternoon, and I discovered I'd forgotten my 20%-off coupons,
dagnabbit! So, I didn't buy anything today, which is probably all for
the best. The store was very crowded and busy, so I did not linger.
That store is just to "tight" for a person to shop leisurely when there
are so many people and carts. I shall return later this week

Sky, who really does not like to shop!

www.webstaurantstore.com
100 sheets for $4; shipping is steep from PA. I just bought some.
KAF also has the sheets -- heavier, I think, and about 4x the cost of
the Webstaurant store.

Since I don't often use parchment paper, I wonder if it's still a good
buy for me to get such a deal ??? It'll take me a long, long time to
use a whole roll that I bought at a local grocery store, and that was
probably more than two years ago(?). Still, it's very nice to know that
buying parchment paper from a restaurant supply place is a lot less
expensive than any grocery or bigbox store! Thanks for the heads-up
about that.

Hey, I don't know if BB&B carries it, but maybe you could pick

Sky, one of my favorite uses for parchment is to line a baking pan
(think 9x13") when I make meatloaf. Sure makes cleanup easier! I also
do other meat baking (e.g., homemade "chicken fingers") on parchment.
If you don't use it often, buy the roll of Reynolds or the store brand
of parchment. I use it quite often. FWIW.

Thanks, Barb I agree with you about the easy cleanup aspect. That's
the best part, eh! I mostly use parchment paper when I infrequently
make chocolate ice box cakes in a typical bread loaf pan. Definitely
does make for easier removal! The box of parchment paper I bought at
the grocery store was a long time ago and it still has a whole lot left
of it yet. I also have some of that new Reynolds non-stick aluminum
foil that's lasted just as long because it's not often used, too. I
don't have the experience to compare these two disparate products. I
use wax paper more often than I do parchment or non-stick foil!

Sky, who forgot the 20%-off BB&B coupons the other day, dagnabbit!

LOL, Nancy I've seen TV commercials for this gizmo. It'd be a
perfect addition for the kitchen utensil drawer so it can take up more
space <g>. I just wonder how well it does or does not work.

Sky, who has a well packed kitchen utensil drawer

I am a tool guy, but that is another story. I look at this "tool" and
see lot's of problems, mostly based on the inconsistency of egg shells,
but still not a tool I would design or buy for that matter. Another
issue for me particularly is I like my eggs "thick" so I pour them into
a pan very slowly from almost pan level so they don't spread out so
much. This makes them better suited for sandwiches or cheeseburgers
Once you start to open the egg with that thing, I think you are pretty
much committed to flopping it into the pan...

I almost fell off my chair laughing. I just saw that commercial
for the first time that day. Hilarious. Who knows, it might be
useful to someone, but really.

Certainly maybe the people in the commercials, who apparently
never cracked an egg without getting many shell fragments in
their food. Despite this personal failing, they shove the food into
their mouths without thinking to check for shards.

I thought the same thing, look at the size of it, where would I
even keep it?

> I just wonder how well it does or does not work.

I'm inclined to think it doesn't, but what do I know.

I agree. I'm also inclined to think the contraption doesn't work too
well and would be easily broken, especially if kept in a crowded kitchen
utensil drawer. Thanks for the giggles
