@news.eternal-september.org: > I suggest you trash the Country Crock and try Smart Balance. No > transfats and they don't put effort into making it taste like margarine. > It's a nostalgic indulgence to me. If there are people who are nostalgic about the taste of margarine, they may also be nostalgic for the sound of falling bombs. There was a wartime nostalgia chic some years back, where Spam dinners and ersatz coffee were served to former servicemen on Parliament Hill here in Ottawa. Thank the gods that died away. We bought margarine for years (Olivina, mostly, part olive oil) but lately we have been buying unsalted butter. I much prefer it although we do keep a container of the margarine around (in case we run out of butter ;-) ). I don't cook with butter though. I cook with pure (not VOO, EVOO, XVOO or what have you) olive oil for eggs, vegetables and meats, and safflower oil for breads and crêpes. My mother ate butter every day and she lived to be 87. -- I have nothing against God. It's his fan club I can't stand. spotted on a poster |

My grandparents were farmers and we spent lots of time with them. They had dairy cows and my grandmother made her own butter and bread. We loved fresh warm bread loaded with fresh butter. She also made jams and jellies. Lou |

It didn't taste like store bought butter, way too salty, and I never liked it.....Sharon |

My grandfather had a bad heart and died of a heart attack at 52. He was on a salt free diet for years before he died. My granny made a salt free batch for him. We had the salted and even as a very young kid it was better than store bought. It's too bad you didn't like it. I was just talking to my mom and mentioned this. She never had commercial butter until she got married in the 50's. Lou |

I just avoided using it. In later years, I could have asked her to do a batch with less salt. She was a sweetheart.....Sharon ps...they both lived into their eighties |
