I was peeling and coring and slicing apples last night for a recipe of
"Salmon, Apples, and Fennel"[1] when I had a flashback and got the giggles from remembering a "cooking show" parody from long ago: The camera follows a pair of hands while a narrator recites the recipe. The narrator goes, "Peel and core an apple" and the hands start doing that, but the narrator immediately goes on to "Butter a baking dish" (or something like that) and the hands drop everything to try to do that while the narrator again immediately goes on to the next step, and so forth, and at the end it's a complete mess. It had me RotFL. But I can't remember where it's from. Might be the movie "The Groove Tube" (1975) or it might be from the great but short-lived PBS series "The Great American Dream Machine" (1971-72) or it might be from somewhere else. Help me out here. Does anyone even remember these shows? (I put "How to Peel and Core and Apple" into YouTube's search box and got a whole list of "straight" videos on the subject, which sent me into hysterics all over again :-) ) [1] http://www.bhg.com/recipe/seafood/sa...les-and-fennel. Very good, but next time I think I'll just braise the salmon in the vegetable/honey mixture or separately - "breaded and fried" doesn't very well work with salmon, IMO. -- Silvar Beitel |

Not quite what I remembered, but in my defense, it *was* 35 years ago. And the hands belong to Chevy Chase! -- Silvar Beitel |

It had > me RotFL. > -- > Silvar Beitel The way I remember it is that The Great American Dream Machine (TGADM) had a short career - two seasons or less. It was very popular with the public and won a number of prestigious awards. However, the Nixon/Agnew administration hated it because of its liberal-oriented satire of political events. Nixon decimated the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by vetoing their appropriations bill. TGADM wasn't supported by the CPB, but the individual artists were. TGADM went off the air. To this day, there has never been an official DVD of the series. Several of the best skits were copied to film which became Groove Tube, which is about all that remains of the show. The film itself shows scan lines from the original TV recording. Chevy Chase and Marshall Efron were regulars on TGADM. Efron became associated with a running gag, "Kramp TV Kitchen", a satire of the Kraft 30-second infomercials of the time. If you search for "Kramp TV" on You Tube, you will see the skit about apples and Kramp Vegetable Lube. The actor is probably Chevy Chase, but might be Marshall Efron (we never see the face). If you search on You Tube for "Marshall Efron", you will find satires about the chemicals that went into a Lemon Creme Pie of the time, one about whatever those words mean that are supposed to indicate the relative size of canned olives (mammoth? jumbo? large?) and how to cook Sardine Rarebit. Chevy Chase was not well-known at the time. Saturday Night Live came later. Both Chase and Efron were Second City performers. Efron is still in the movies (City Island, Horton Hears a Who and Ice Age, for example), usually as a voice actor. |
