Those are nice. Safeway has reusable bags now (for only 99¢) that are
the large paper bag size. They come in any color you want as long as
it's black.

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Looks like a dirt collector to me. What are you going to do when you

All the local grocery stores around here sell inexpensive reusable
shopping bags. We have a supply of them and it was a PITA for a while to
remember to take them with us when we shop, but now we keep a number of
them in each car and are in the habit of returning them to the car the
next trip out instead of storing them int he house. I like using them
because they are big enough that I can get away with 3 or 4 of them for
most shopping trips. Even better, I can manage all the bags in one trip
from the car to the house. By packing them with like items, I also find
it handier for putting things away. Frozen stuff goes into one bag and
heads for the freezer. Another holds things to go in the fridge. Minimal
expense and planning makes shopping a lot easier.

Every grocery store around here has green shopping bags. They've been
in use for at least 3-4 years now. They are
heavy duty and have a flat bottom with a piece of plastic that lays in
the bottom of the bag to add stability. They last like crazy.
The only thing I didn't like was that the piece of plastic was thin
and cracked easily so I cut some heavier plastic and replaced
them. The bags fold neatly and I keep them all folded up and stacked
inside one bag in the trunk of the car.

If you have a spill you wash off the plastic. And if the bag is
affected, it's washable.

The grocery stores give you 5 cents credit for each bag used. Not a
lot, but it keeps plastic bags out of the landfill.

Here's a picture of the type of bag I'm talking about.

These are my favorite bags: http://www.envirosax.com
I've given a few as gifts, too. (They have a sale going on right now
for US and Canadian folks). I keep them in the car, too.

Nice bags. Our stores sell the typical green bags, plus decorative
quilted bags and quilted bags for frozen foods. Some of the stores had
special ones made for Christmas, which they were selling for 50 cents,
then 25 cents, but who wants to look at a Christmasy looking bag all year?

Yeah, here, too - sometimes they're free - usually they're 99 cents.

I love that they are square on the bottom, with a little
reinforcement.

I can see giving them as gifts, but $8.50 is a little rich for my
blood.

1. That's what plastic bags are for (to isolate drippy stuff.).
2. Most cloth/quilted bags are machine washable.

Barb introduced me to these a few years ago.

They occasionally go on sale and a fantastic for travel. I keep one or
two in a pocket or purse on a trip and put whatever I buy in them or
even snacks or trash. They can hold dirty laundry and get washed right
along with the laundry or get carried onboard with last minute stuff
that doesn't fit in a suitcase. The nice thing is that they fold so
small and are so lightweight compared to other multi-use bags.

In addition, they don't cost a fortune (like LLBean or Lands End canvas
bags) so if someone really admires one, I don't feel bereft giving it away.

Our local superemarket sells them for $1, with a nickel off each time
you use them. A zippered, insulated bag (good in the summer) is
$1.99.

I went to rec.crafts.textiles.sewing and asked the following directly to
John, who actually uses bags like that:

Question 1: How much do they hold as compared
with regular shopping bags (are they "deep" enough).

John's resposnse: You could make them any height
you wanted, but remember the higher they are, the heavier they are,
when loaded, and you will have to carry them from the store to the
transportation and then home from there. I have a number of them we
take to the store. and that way we are not burdened with overweight
carrying capacity. They are sized to hold gallon jugs of milk, which
is the largest single item we buy, and then can be filled with other
things, to fill out the bag. Today we went to the grocery store, and
came back with 2 gallons of milk, veggies, 2 quarts of Apple Juice, 8
Yoplait yogurt, a few jars of condiments, and I carried both bags to
the car.

Question 2: what do you do if you run into a leaky bag of chicken or
something like that.

John's response: I would think that if you kept the chicken/meat in a
plastic bag, it
would contain the juices. Being as my wife and I are vegetarians, we
have never had to face that dilemma...As to ca Pop then in the washer and
dryer. They are 100% cotton that I have preshrunk, prior to assembly,
as is the cotton batting within the quilted sides and bottom and
straps. They will clean up like any other cotton item. If you are
carrying a gallon of Ink, then all bets are off.

As for being insulated, I emphasize the following out of Johns response:
"...cotton batting...".

Understood. I take one when I travel. It's lightweight and rolls up to
the size of a nicely make holubka and slides easily into a jean or
jacket pocket. WeBeShoppin'. ($8.50 is the price from the mfgr; I paid
$12 at the Women's Museum of Art (something like that) in Washington,
D.C. It's proven to be an invaluable and practical remembrance of the
trip.)

When I first arrived in SC to help my mother she asked me to buy some wine
when I went to the grocery store. I wasn't expecting them to give me a free
heavy-duty wine-tote with a reinforced flat bottom and room for four
bottles. It didn't hit me until later, oh! they want me to bring this back
for later purchases. (Note: my grocery store back in TN didn't offer these
bags; maybe they do now.)

At that time the grocery store here was selling the flat-bottomed grocery
"totes " for IIRC 2/50 cents. But since my mother insisted on using the
plastic bags to line small trash cans in the TV room and the bathrooms she
wanted her groceries in the plastic bags. The price for the heavy grocery
bags/totes with handles went up to 99 cents each and may even be more now.
I got a couple of them. They work just fine when I'm not picking up too
many items. But I normally only shop once a month (the exception is fresh
local produce for a specific recipe). If I need more room than the couple
of tote bags allow I do ask for paper. And I have to remember to put the
cloth totes in the car after I've emptied them, otherwise I forget to take
them. I'm getting better about that
