Watching Travel and Living..........

http://www.louislunch.com/

Looks damn good!!! Especially where/how they cook them, and the fact that
they ban tomato sauce.

Even though I am a recent convert to tomato sauce......... but only one.

Ketchup is not tomato sauce. Technically it's a sauce made from tomatoes,
but it is not tomato sauce.

"tomato sauce" is Australian for "ketchup". I've no idea what they
call the
substance that Americans refer to as "tomato sauce". Maybe they don't
have it, since it's just diluted tomato paste, for the most part.

Well, very interesting. They are about 20 miles from here, maybe I
should take a ride down this weekend and try them out! If I do, I will
bring my camera and post up some pics.

A Cheeseburger without Ketchup, heresy... They should be shot dead right
where they stand... Ground up and fed to the cows, with no condiments!

Scotty, don't mess with my Cheeseburger!

In my neighborhood, a cheeseburger without mustard is heresy. ;-)
Ketchup is for french fries.

Well, that's pretty clearly wrong. Not everybody lives in the US, and
even in countries that share the same basic language (English in this
case), the words don't always have exactly the same meaning. And
there's even people in the world who don't use English as their
principal language!

Please do.

They even steam the cheese........ and there's *lots" of it on the
burger!!

Apparently, it's some secret cheese blend that they won't give out. Looks
like a mix of mozzarella and cheddar to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchup

Ketchup (also spelled catsup), also known as tomato ketchup, tomato sauce,
red sauce, Tommy sauce, Tommy K, or dead horse,[1] is a condiment, usually
made from tomatoes. The ingredients in a typical modern ketchup are tomato
concentrate, spirit vinegar, corn syrup or other sugar, salt, spice and
herb extracts (including celery), spice and garlic powder.[2] Allspice,
cloves, cinnamon, onion, and other vegetables may be included.

Steamed burgers are ok, but better to make the trip to Shady Glen in
Manchester or Vernon for their burgers with crispy cheese. You can even
get the crispy cheese as a side. Also recommend the Grape Nut ice cream
while you're there.

Wiki again fails to account for regional differences.
Louis Lunch is located in New Haven, CT, USA. The forbidden condiment there
is not called anything else but ketchup. Red sauce? Tommy sauce, dead horse?
Maybe other places, long long ago, but not there, not now.

The restaurant in question is in CT, USA, and has been profiled numerous
times in TV food programs. They specifically ban ketchup , by name, and
mustard.

OK, I have it bookmarked (Louis Lunch) and I will make a visit there
asap with my superior knowledge of cheeseburgers, and my camera and
fill you all in.

On another note, somebody here noted a lunch outfit in Meridan CT that
was also featured on TV, I have lost that link and would appreciate if
someone would repost it.

Thanks, Scotty

I could spit on Shady Glenn from here I have had their burgers for all
of my life. They are special and unique. I think I am going to have to
take a weekend soon and make some trips out and judge for my self. It
could make a good "eat report" post to this group similar to what we do
on our riding groups

Scotty, man, a whole weekend of eating Cheeseburgers!

I didn't notice if anyone mentioned the White Castle that used to be in
Hartford CT. I think it has been gone for a while though.

Never saw a White Castle, but Augie and Ray's in E. Hartford is another
good burger place.

Is that on Burnside Ave? I thought they closed down a while back. But if
they are still there, I will. Right across from Pratt and Whitney there
is a nice fish joint and there was always the little diner right up
route 5 too, near the South Windsor border but I will stick to burgers
for this one. Over the summer I will make a run down route 1 for the
fish houses... This could turn into a long weekend with a lot of
burgers... My trainer is gonna' kill me..

Yup, used to be a White Castle right downtown on the green by the arch.
Just down the street from the train station and my all time favorite
(long ago gone) The Chicken Coop which was stuffed right under the train
tracks. They had the best Chicken ever, we used to stop there every
Sunday on the way home from Church.

I think it was Burnside, right next to P&W at any rate. They were there
in 2004 when I left the frozen northeast. I have heard a few of my other
favorite places closed since I left, apparently I was single handedly
keeping them in business.

I used to work in Clinton for a while and every Wed I think it was, we'd
hit Lenny and Joe's for all you can eat fish and chips.

THX... I told my wife and the little one about our coming trip. We are
going to make a couple of days of it I could eat all of the burgers in
one day, but the family would burst open and spill all over the place.
Probably mess up the Jeep real good I will keep you all posted.

It is nice to know I am not the only one who likes mustard on their
burgers. Maybe we should have our own private club. :-)

Becca

ObFood:

Buttermilk Pancakes

Dry ingredients:

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon fine salt

Wet ingredients:

2 cups buttermilk
4 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 beaten eggs

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, whisk together. Combine wet
ingredients in a second bowl, whisk, then add the dry ingredients and
whisk until just combined. Let sit for 10 minutes before you begin cooking.

Note: My mother used to say that husbands were like pancakes, you
always throw the first one out. If you let the batter sit for a few
minutes, your first pancake will turn out just fine.

Cool.

Someone also mentioned White Castle...... there was also a segment on
that, but they just looked like 'dinner roll' burgers, mini-me's.

That could have been the only message my newsreader did not catch, at
least I would like to think that.

Becca

Ob Food:

Coconut Pralines

3 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups grated coconut
1 cup milk
1 tbsp butter

Combine the sugar, coconut and milk in a heavy pot and bring to a boil
over medium heat. Boil, stirring, until the mixture comes to the
soft-ball stage (about 239 degrees on a candy thermometer). Remove from
the heat, add the butter and beat until the mixture begins to sugar.

Drop in small mounds on wax paper. Cool, then gently lift with a thin
knife. Store in an airtight container.
