It goes right along with "Don't eat the yellow snow."

I feel very sorry for those folks who are being hit so hard with snow. It's
a cute survey but I'm sure for some people the last thing they're thinking
of is making "snow ice cream"

Eeeeuuuwwww.

My kids used to ask for maple syrup on snow after reading one of the
Little House on the Prairie books that talked about it. IIRC, we made
it one year and it was unimpressive.

Mrs. Butterworth's on city smog snow isn't quite the same as real maple
syrup on old time non-acid rain snow.

Oh, the nastiness of the concoction that one of the survey takers
makes with evaporated milk. I bet they just *said* that.

This is something different from sno-cones? Never heard of it.

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.

It's a mixture of snow, sugar and some form of milk product......sweetened
condensed, evaporated, heavy cream, depended upon 'whar ya wus from' as to
what went in it.....mixed together and set back out in the snow drift to set
up.......kept the house-bound snow crazy kids busy making and eating it,
didn't need any electric to do (sometimes the lines came down) and they had
a sense of accomplishment that they MADE something out of the snow.

Had it once, once was enough, I didn't like the taste, but then again, all
sorts of elixirs, extracts and the like could be added to 'flavor it up' a
bit.

When I saw this I realized I had totally forgotten about
snow ice cream. We always made it when I was a kid.
I'm going to stop at the store on the way home tonight
and buy some cream. (We just used milk when I was a kid
but I'm going to upgrade to heavy cream.)

I actually have a recipe or 2 for it that I have collected
over the years but never tried. I'll have to look them up
and see what sounds good.

I might also try the maple syrup thing. I used to go to
the Maple Festival in Meyersdale, PA and they had something
similar that the PA Dutch used to make. That was good.

The U. of Pgh. was closed Mon. through Wed. I couldn't believe
it! I've been here 18 years and this is only the 2nd time they've
closed for bad weather. I actually came in to work on Tue. just
assuming that we'd only get Mon. I was here most of the day before
I went down to the main office and found a note on the door that
the Univ. was closed. Boy was I ****ed. Went home at 3pm. And
when they closed Wed. too I was flabbergasted.

I was just thinking of things that would be good over
snow.

dulce de leche
coconut milk (sweetened)
honey
preserves
pomegranate molasses

And you could add some canned or frozen fruits like
pineapple or strawberries or raspberries. The pineapple
would be good with the coconut milk.

Here's one snow ice cream recipe I found in my files.
Never made it. May try it this weekend. Probably
won't do the condiments thing, except maybe the cherry.

SNOW CREAM

1 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 c. whipping cream
1 1/4 t. vanilla
4-6 c. fresh clean snow
condiments and maraschino cherries (optional)

Combine first three in large chilled bowl. Mix well.
Gradually stir in enough snow to give a smooth, fluffy
consistency. Stir in condiments such as chopped nuts,
chocolate or butterscotch chips, sprinkles, etc. Serve
immediately in cones or bowls with cherry on top. Makes 7 cups.
