Default Any interest in a Pacific NW cook-in?

Hard to believe, but it's been 7 years since the last gathering at
Raneé's place in Gig Harbor, WA. We had a nice turnout and a great time.

Cindy and I were wondering if there is any interest in another one,
perhaps in the spring or summer of this year. Consider this post as a
request for comments and ideas.

We are willing to help out with organizing/coordinating, but our home
might not be the best site for an event - we are in a small house in
north Seattle. But we have several neighbors who are serious foodies
and might be interested in participating. One of them just got back
from a corporate retreat where, as a group-bonding activity, they
divided people into teams for an "Iron Chef" competition. That could be
one of the scheduled activities for a cook-in. Might be even more
exciting to watch if the competition was scheduled to start after the
cocktail hour. Cindy made me promise that the secret ingredient will
not be geoducks.

So for starters, we should try to figure out how many people would be
interested in showing up. Do we need a house with a big kitchen? A
small restaurant? The Seattle Convention Center? From how far away
would people be coming? RFC'ers from outside the Seattle area should
note that there are many local attractions that could be used for
field-trips: Pike Place Market, ethnic food and spice shops, the
Fisherman's Terminal, oyster farms, nearby wineries, etc. And lots of
great restaurants, brewpubs, and espresso shops, of course.

At some point in the process we need to pick out the date(s) and
location. A weekend is the obvious choice. Or would it be better to
brainstorm for ideas on what to do at a cook-in, and then figure out the
appropriate time and place to do it?

So the floor is open... any ideas?

I'm wholly interested, but unable to make it.

The PacNW is forever my home, the place to which I'll eventually
return.

I guess that might be Spring if we have the gathering at your house.
Are you volunteering? Brisbane qualifies as Pacific NW. It's on the
Pacific. It's northwest of something. New Zealand?

BTW, I certainly did not mean to specify Seattle as the only possible
location of a PacNW cook-in.

Given the weather patterns of the pacific northwest i (a native of the
area) would recommend a late summer date.

Spring starts 1st September.

I'm sure there be an absolute *plethora* of willing participants who'd
want to fly over here just for a cook-in!! (NOT!!)

No worries, I just wanted to know what months you're talking about. If
things change, I've always said that part of the world is on my to-do
list.

I've been a Seahawks fan for almost 20 years :-)

I would be interested, Julian. I'm not interested in an Iron Chef
competition though. I think that kind of frenzied competiton would not
foster a 'getting to know you' atmosphere. If I'm going to meet new
people and talk food, I'd much rather have a huge pot luck. That way
everyone could bring dishes and if there a list posted for who is
bringing what so we could have all the bases covered. I love cooking
for people and tasting other people's food.

Anytime after July 4th and before October 1 is good Pac NW weather.
Especially this year, since El Nino is bringing us
a 'tomato summer'.

I'm in the Bellingham area, unfortunately I live in a condo, so no
space here.

I'm in Portland, OR and I'll travel a bit to meet up if I can find the
time off. I agree with the potluck idea. Let everyone bring food, or
ingredients, and you can either cook on the spot or not.

I'd be interested in coming up for one, schedule permitting.

(I can do without an Iron Chef kind of thing, though .

We had creamy garlic and chilli prawns, with whole egg fettucine, and my High
Apple pie for dessert.

A huge day coming up tomorrow, so off to bed shortly.

I suspect August would be getting on to latish Summer up there seeing
they're so far behind us. ;-)

Cheers, Phred.
