Default Valentine's Day Food

Hi,

I've been invited to a Valentine's Day party on Saturday. They've
asked me to bring a dish with the only stipulation that it be some
sort of red food. I'm thinking that there will probably be a lot of
red pasta dishes and strawberry desserts! Does anybody have any ideas
that are creative and may round out the meal? Side dishes,
appetizers, salads? I've been thinking of red cabbage cole slaw or
salad made from red lettuce and vegetables, etc, but they don't seem
very interesting.

Thanks,
Karen

When I take red cabbage with kielbasi cut up in pieces, every single
spoonful is gone and I bring home an empty crockpot. I brown a little
garlic powder & onion powder(or chopped onion)in some bacon fat then
add the cabbage & kielbasi. Good Luck, have a good time, Nan in DE

I would make a roasted-beet salad, or a red-rice salad.

I'd make a nice borscht, the pureed type, with some sour cream. It will be
pink. Or a soup of beets, sweet red peppers, and apple, also pureed with
plain yogurt instead of sour cream if you want to be healthier. Also pink.

A German cabbage dish called Rotkohl. Everything turns red, the onions,
apples, etc. I really like this dish and I have not had it in a long time.

Becca

Rotkohl

1 red cabbage, shredded
1 c. chopped onion
2 tbsp. butter
1/4 c. sugar
3-5 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt
Pepper to taste
3 apples, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 tsp. caraway seed (optional)

Saute chopped onion in butter. Add cabbage, sugar, vinegar, salt,
pepper, and apples. Simmer 30 minutes. Add caraway seed. Serve
hot.

How about a nice, rich CRAB CHOWDER, with the reddish shelled claw meat
(from either king crab or snow crab claws) floating on top? (Of course,
dust with paprika as well!)

Or - just has a brain-pop - how about CHICKEN PAPRIKASH, with plenty of
paprika for color, mellowed by a healthy dollop of sour cream? MMmmmm......

I know these aren't really red-red, but you could always do a cherry pie!!

Just a thought or two. Enjoy the party tonight!

Van

This looks really good, and easy... a great side for pot roast.

I love caraway seeds... add a splash of Kümmel and save having to pick
seeds from between your teeth.

Thank you, Becca.

Happy Valentine's Day!
