This morning my cat attacked a duck, the wing had been destroyed, I
believed the duck was dead. so I put it in a plastic bag.
Later in the morning my neighbour went to put it in the bin!

Unfortunately it was alive. He screamed out to me.
I (deep breath) tried to wring it's neck, didn't work, so I hit it's
neck with a spade the sand was too soft. Finally on the paving it was
over. I can't stop crying. I just wish I could have done a quick job.
What's the quickest way to humanely do this?
I don't have a burly kind of guy in my life so I have to face this on
my own.......... Thankyou for your help

Evidently you have no concern for the welfare of animals, preferring
instead to make light of something in order to make you feel like a
'big man'. Please do not reply again, why not find something more
constructive to do with your time?

A hatchet is probably your best bet. We always had good luck
killing chickens with them. Best to do it on something made of
wood.

But that's the whole point...the duck is made of duck, not wood.
If the duck were made of wood, Petey probably wouldn't have
cried nearly as much.

It could have been a wood duck.

If it's time to kill something then at least try to be a
decent human being about it and try to make a point of not making
it suffer. It's good that he's thinking about it and how to deal
with it in the future, so he doesn't make the poor animal suffer
in the same ways again. Clubbing an animal at the base of the
skull where the skull meets the spine is another good way. Trying
to kill a possum by clubbing it in the forehead is very hard to
do, and appears to cause a good bit of suffering to the poor
possum. But at the base of the skull...that works.

I'll bet. If it will kill a tough old possum, a human
wouldn't stand a chance.
It works on cats. A friend told me he had a cat that needed
to be killed, but he wasn't going to take the time and spend the
money to have it "put down". It was just a stray that had come
along. I told him I'd look at it, and what walked around the
corner didn't even look like a real cat...more like a cartoon.
Its body was so scrawny from worms, and it's fur so trashed out
with mange or whatever, its head looked huge. It walked sort of
in a daze. I hit it at the base of the skull with the small end
of a baseball bat, and it began the death convulsions
immediately. I hit it again a couple of times to be sure, but was
delighted that it had gone so well and the cat never suffered at
all. It never even knew it got hit. There was a kid in about
eighth grade there who watched the whole deal, and started
insulting me for being so happy about "killing a cat". I told him
the cat was suffering and had no hope of ever doing anything
except suffering until it died, and that pretty much any other
death would be worse than what it got. I was happy that I had
killed it one blow, instead of hitting it wrong and the poor cat
suffering even more and remaining conscious for another couple of
blows, or even worse try to get away and have to be run down and
all that goes with that.... I believe he finally understood.
