I am going to be a guest in SC - are there Publix there in abundance
(Charleston area). I was thinking of a gift card for my hostess. Or,
what is the major grocery chain? Thanks.

Plenty of Publix stores there-

My son just moved to Charleston so I'll be visiting there frequently
too. Yay!! I had even researched where the Navy commissary was thinking
I'd want to help him stock his kitchen (when he finally rents an
apartment). It turns out his employer feeds him breakfast and lunch so I
don't think he's going to need Mom fretting over him eating. <whew!>

I love Publix, but in Charleston you might look at Harris Teeter.
They have a great supermarket at 290 East Bay Street, just off
of Meeting Street. Historic location, super wine collection, a really
nice store.

Someone I work with goes to Charleston frequently and she mentioned how much
she likes to stop at Harris Teeter when they're up there. But yes, there
are Publix all over the place

I shop at Publix. But another grocery store prevalent in SC is Food Lion.
I can only tell you the one near me is old and looks rather dingy. Not
dirty, just an old store badly in need of a face lift That's no comment
on the quality of anything they sell. It's just not very inviting. But I'm
told some of the Food Lion stores in other areas around Beaufort are quite
nice. So perhaps the ones in Charleston would be, too.

Suggestion: you might discreetly inquire of friends/family of the hostess
if you know them where she prefers to shop and go from there. I think the
idea of a gift card is nice

Enjoy your visit! I'll be in Mt. Pleasant (just north of Charleston) within
the next week but not for anything pleasant. My cat, Persia, has to have
radioactive isotope therapy for hyperthyroidism. (sigh)

"THE WRECK", to hell with the grocery stores!!! You both have to go here
and eat!!! http://www.wreckrc.com/

If you don't go there you will have missed a life time chance at eating
at one of the best spots on the East coast!!!
