Default Old Dogs and New Tricks

Yesterday I grilled fresh asparagus instead of steaming them in butter
in a skillet as has been my preferred method since Moses wore kneepants.
I probably won't ever do them my old way again, I liked it that much.
One more thing in favor the grilling is that there's no pan to wash,
just a hunk of foil to crumple and get rid of.

My thanks to all who touted the grilling method. And no, I have no
plans to do it with the dirt chunks. Blech. Blech. Triple-blech.

You should try grilling broccoli - straight on the grill - no foil
necessary.

Slice it through the stem end so you have two halves. Toss with olive
oil, salt and pepper. It is a totally different vegetable.

Carrots?? I will have to try that this year. I have done corn and I
wouldn't have corn any other way.

New tricks are fine but old ways don't have to be discarded forever.
For one thing, doing them in a pan enables you to control the degree
of garlic in ways you can't on the grill. Plus, in a pan you have
your choice of butter or oil or both while for some reason everyone
seems to always use oil on the grill...... -aem

True. The way I cook, though, (very plain), and the fact that I'm the
only one who'll eat it, the grill will be nice. :-)

I've done corn on the grill; don't eat much cooked carrot (mostly in a
pot roast). Thanks, D.

I do mine in the oven from now on. Trim, lay half one way, half the
other way on foil, throw on some butter, S&P, and then into a 365F
oven for 7-9 minutes. Pretty much the same as grilling on foil.

I did it your way up until a year ago (a year ago it was "my way").

And don't forget grilled mushrooms, or zucchini!
I like to add those to kebabs.

Carrots? They take so long to cook! Do you pre-cook them first?

Just picked the first 2 spears a couple of days ago. Will try this
real soon.

I do that when I grill zucchini and yellow (crookneck) squash, too.
Delicious! The only reason foil was ever mentioned is asparagus spears (and
some types of fish) tend to fall through the grill grate.

Or one of our summer favorites:

@@@@@ Now You're Cooking! Export Format

Corn On The Cob With Cheese And Lime

barbecue, vegetables

4 ears corn in the husk
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper; or to taste
1/4 cup cotija or feta cheese; shredd

Prepare grill.

Soak corn husks in cold water 10 mins. Drain corn and grill on a rack
set 5 - 6 inches over glowing coals until husks are charred, about 10
mins. Shuck corn and grill until kernels are browned in spots, about
10 mins.

While corn is grilling, in a small bowl whisk together mayonnaise and
cayenne pepper. Using the small tear-dropped shape holes on a
four-sided grater, grate cheese.

Brush mayonnaise mixture onto hot corn and sprinkle with cheese. Serve
with lime wedges.
