Letter sent VIA their website. Let companies know how much you love
or hate their products. Product: Premium White Chocolate Baking Chips. These things are downright terrible. "Premium" my ass! There's not even any chocolate or cocoa butter in them. How can even legally call these things "chocolate"?!?!?! I'm glad I tasted these before using them in my recipe. How could you even produce something this terrible? I used to live in San Francisco so I'm still loyal to a lot of local products from that area, but Ghiradelli is off my list permanently from now on. I'm totally aghast at how bad these are. Sincerely, Steve Wertz Next up: Mezetta Napa Valley Bistro Antipasta Olives in Chardonnay Wine. |

Their white chips don't say at their web site but any normal person who was concerned would have perused the ingredients on the label at the store.... you're not normal, sqwertz dwarf. http://ghiradellichocolate.com/products/bars_white.aspx White chocolate is really a novelty ingredient, more for decoration/presentation... hardly anyone buys white chocolate for eating out of hand... would be like scoffing down a stick of butter. I've eaten lots of Ghiradelli chocolate (I'm a dark fan), I've been many times to thier Frisco location, it's no better or worse a product than the best of the Euros. Still no one anywhere produces better chocolate than Barton's Bonbonniere did. http://brooklynology.brooklynpublicl...et-It-Is!.aspx |

Response: Mr. Wertz, Thank you for contacting Ghirardelli Chocolate. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with the Classic White Chips you purchased. Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has been manufacturing fine chocolates for more than 150 years. We take great pride in delivering world-class, premium chocolate products to the consumer -- which is why we guarantee your satisfaction with what we make. We are confident that your next Ghirardelli® chocolate experience will meet or exceed your expectations. You will be sent a coupon with which you can purchase new Ghirardelli product of your choosing. We hope you enjoy it. ---- "World class my ass!" (I'm surprised they even responded to a message that contained profanity) Obviously if I buy those same classic white chips, they will not exceed my expectations. Unfortunately that's all I can get around aropund here are the Ghiradelli "chocolate" chips. Maybe I'll try their regular chocolate chips after I read the label. -sw |

Yes, the fact that their web site doesn't give an ingredient list and nutrition information like virtually every other food manufacturer's site does isn't a good sign. I have to go grocery shopping later this afternoon and will take a look and see what the ingredients actually are. |

Their white chocolate baking bar does say it contains cocoa butter. I think the white chips are meant to be a cheap confection, a novelty product for decoration. sqwertz seems to have an ongoing problem with not reading labels until after the fact. |

According to their web site Ghiradelli makes no such product... they make "white chips", NOT "white chocolate chips". Swertz, you are an imbecile... And on the package it does say chocolate, but that may be a technicality because "chocolate" is part of the company name. In which case, I think it's deceptive. If the chocolate laws have not changed, then they should, according to all their marketing materials, contain chocolate or they are frauds (just like Sheldon). -sw |

No chocolate again (that's not what Sheldon said, BTW - that liar). But they do print "chocolate" on this product twice: Once as part of their name, and the other as pasrt of "chocolate flavor". Along with the promo piece they sent me - they "manufacture world-class chocolate" so a reasonable person would be led to assume that if it looks like chocolate, then it must be chocolate. That's what Ghiradelli does, after all - make _chocolate_ (or at least they used to). I think they're being purposely deceptive and fraudulent. -sw -sw |

If they're selling "the chocolate experience" that would imply that their product is as much "chocolate" as a hooker selling you "the girlfriend experience" is your girl friend. |

You are right about the name! I guess that should be indicative of the nonchocolate nature of those chips. -- Jean B. |

That is from 2002. Unless time is really flying by, the rules for chocolate changed after that. This assumes the changes that apply to other chocolates also apply to white... "chocolate". Maybe not though, because then there would be nothing related to chocolate in the product! That might be related to why the chips in question don't say they are chocolate! -- Jean B. |

If I am going to consume chocolate, it is dark chocolate. I will very rarely try milk chocolate from a good manufacturer to see what it is like. Some are much more interesting than the US norm, but I still prefer very dark chocolate. -- Jean B. |

Seems like there are two morals to this story: 1) chop the baking bars if you want white chocolate chips; 2) read the labels (maybe every single time you buy a product--those manufacturers can be sneaky). -- Jean B. |

I have not figured out anything I really want to do with white chocolate, including just eating it. I haven't looked at the chips variety, but I did post about a bar variety (repost below) that is pretty deceptively labeled: I happen to have a big bar of their white stuff here and note the following: - Company name "Ghirardelli(r) Chocolate" - Candy making and dipping bar - "White Chocolate flavor" - Ingredient list contains no cocoa or cocoa butter. |

No, it was last revised April 1, 2009. I remember thinking when I saw that, that if I had been in charge of that department, I would have issued the revised rule either the day before or the day after. |

The Ghirardelli web site claims that their white chocolate bar (notice white *chocolate*) does contain real cocoa butter. http://www.ghirardelli.com/products/bars_white.aspx I do agree that the Ghirardelli web site is awful, greatly lacking in any utile product information, not only lacking but also misleading. I tried to phone their customer service but to no avail, there is no person to speak with, only voice mail... I left a message three hours ago to call me, so far nothing, even though their message implies that they will call back without delay. I wanted to ask why they have real white chocolate yet produce fraudelent white chips, and why their is no nutritional information for each of their products at their web site... and also why their voice mail message is a garbled unintelligible voice with a mouthful of shit... an extremely unprofessional enterprise (expected, it's CA), I will not buy their products. There are plenty of much classier chocolates out there offered by far classier folks. For far less money Hersheys is a far better product, and if ever you phone you will be met by very polite professionalism. And when I want fancy schmancy chocolate and won't look at the price ($40/lb) there is a small chocolatier a few towns over... in fact my neighbor across the road, his wife works there... their extra dark tamerind chocolate is to live for: http://www.lifebychocolates.com/ |

Yes, but how is their web site for nutritional information, and their customer service hotline...? ;-) -- If you limit your actions in life to things that nobody can possibly find fault with, you will not do much. -- Lewis Carroll |

No, they should all die. :-( By the way, the only Ghiradelli product which is halfway passable is a recent product, their high cocoa-content bars, which often can be found in the baking chocolate section of a supermarket. |
