Just in time for summer salads, there has been a huge recall of
lettuce because of an e. coli outbreak that has sickened at least 19
people, 12 of whom were hospitalized. The romaine lettuce was sold in
23 states and the District of Columbia under the Freshway and Imperial
Sysco brands.

College students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Ohio
State in Columbus and Daemen College in Amherst, NY are among those
affected, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The shredded romaine was recalled by Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio,
which said it came from one of its processing facilities. It was sold
to wholesalers, food service outlets, and some in-store salad bars and
delis in the following areas: Alabama, Connecticut, District of
Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York,
North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The recalled romaine products were also sold for distribution to in-
store salad bars and delis for Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets,
and Marsh stores in the states listed above, Freshway said in a press
release. The romaine was sold separately and as part of salad blends.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that as of May 5
there were a total of 19 confirmed and 10 probable cases related to
the outbreak. The number of ill persons identified in each of three
states is: Michigan (10 confirmed and 3 probable); New York (2
confirmed and 5 probable); and Ohio (7 confirmed and 2 probable).

Freshway Foods advises restaurants, distributors, and retailers to
throw out or refrain from using its shredded romaine lettuce with a
“use by” dates of on or before May 12. Freshway Foods is also advising
consumers not to eat “grab and go” salads sold at in-store salad bars
and delis at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets and Marsh stores.
