OK, so I just signed up on Facebook with my REAL name (I was Charles
Manson before). This was just to contact a childhood friend.

How did it know that I knew many of you? Does it remember all the
people who searched for me in the past?

It even had a few more childhood friends I hadn't thought about for
a while. But now I'd like to send them a piece of my mind! The
nerve of them to look me up!

Anyway - I guess I sent out a few friend requests as soon as I
logged in. Don't feel obligated, of course.

Cookies.

Your request was immediately deleted...... and don't send it again.

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than have a toxic *** texan as a
"friend".

I've mentioned this before. It's what scared the crap out of me about
FB. I don't know about the reader you use but FB went through
downloaded headers in agent. It came up with an amazing amount of
friend suggestions. I've emailed exactly three people from RFC but it
pulled up way more than that. There's no other way they could have
done it unless they scanned my newsreader. Maybe if I'd cleared
headers first it wouldn't have but who knew?

It probably searched your high school. Although it wouldn't surprise
me if it did remember searches.

Jerry does not have time to click on links. Besides, Facebook would
just remind him of how much people really hate him.

He may be out there, but nut under his fake last name: Sauk.

It brought up a ton of people from RFC when I first signed up. I
just assume these people have searched for me at some time or
another. How else would it know a few of my childhood friends that
don't use Usenet?

There is no way Facebook could have gotten access to my Usenet
client using Seamonkey (or even internet explorer). You're just
really paranoid!

It did this before I put in my high school(s). And how did it pick
out my three best friends (at one time), but nobody else?

Does this mean I have to Shape Up!

Does it tell me when people 'unfriend' me?
Can I send 'enemy' requests?

Do you exchange emails with people on RFC? Facebook will go through
your email address book and make "friend suggestions".....bleh.

Facebook did not get access to my address book. Nor sis I give it
the password to check my email for names.

Damn, you people are paranoid!

Again, I put in my college and high school info a couple hours
*after* it had suggested friends.

It works solely on who has looked you up in the past, and who of
those people have friends in common.

Here I am on Facebook for 6 hours and already I'm defending them...
but it's only pure common sense! Facebook is not magic! It may be
evil, but it's a stupid evil!

Any searches done by anyone on FB are saved and used by FB as part of
their data matching.

I joined the RFC group too. I don't know how groups work in FB, in fact I
don't know how much works with it. I only joined it to see my sister's
pictures years ago when she wouldn't put them anywhere else. Now it seems
everyone I know has an account, even my ex-husband. LOL Yes, he friended
me.

Did you not read any of the links I posted?
Facebook downloads a human neural virus which
infects the part of the brain that does the
buying decisions. If you don't know that,
you've probably already bought one of them
topsy-turvy tomato planters and a Magic Bullet.

Hey! I've seen the produce from the tomato planter--awesome. Requires
an awful lot of water, though -- a couple times a day is what its owner
said. And Miracle Gro.

OK, you got me a-googling again. So they really work as advertised?
Would you buy one? (Just curious, because we grow our tomatoes
the 'traditional' way i.e. out back in the vegetable patch <g> )

I don't have a place to hang it where it would get the necessary direct
sunlight. If I did, I would. For entertainment and conversational
value if nothing else. The chap who owned it said it needed a lot of
water, my niece said he fertilized the heck out of it, too.

You can do the same thing with a five-gallon plastic bucket, cut a hole
in the middle of the bottom, cover the hole with a couple of coffee
filters, fill with potting soil, throw in a handful of that granular
long-lasting fertilizer (Osmocote IIRC), plant your tomato, hang the
thing up where it gets twelve hours a day of sunlight and water the heck
out of it.

I used to grow cherry tomatoes in a big hanging pot around the eves of
the house and got a lot of salad tomatoes that way.

And here's another article about the dangers of Facebook:

Same here. And not just RFC. There were way too many to even read.

Unless it scanned your machine for emal addresses matching FB
accounts. One of the links Mark posted had a comment from someone who
said they use IP addresses to make friend matches and gave his test
example. That could be a better explanation.

I don't know if I'm right or wrong but names came up from groups I've
only lurked and never posted to. There's no way they would have
searched for me. And some of the people from RFC that came up would
rather have poked their eyes out with sticks than be my "friend."

> You're just really paranoid!

Could be. I'm not computer savvy enough to be able to figure out WTF
FB really does but I do try to learn as much as I go. I do know
there's negative stuff about FB published daily and I don't trust
them.

>(hate to break it to you ;-)

Worse things have happened.

Well that makes it sound like my alleged paranoia was well founded
then. Maybe it did a background and credit check on you too.

FB can be a fun place to share with RL friends. The surveys and
groups folks join or like pretty much brand you forever. I don't do
those or play any of the useless games.

Read these if you want. Or not. FB is worse than aol was 10 years
ago.

There was an ad on craigslist today. A woman was wanting to
sharecrop someone's sunny back yard.
I had a great tomato this morning that I bought at Shop'n Save last
Friday. It sat at room temp for 5 days, and I swear it was like a
garden tomato. Went great with crispy fried bacon.

I think Farmers' Markets are just great for garden tomatoes.

But, I've been looking at those rectangular containers on legs (with
wheels, too, if you want) for planting tomatoes - off the ground, easy
to tend - a nice redwood one is around $149 (it's pretty big) but Ace
Hardware is selling a smaller (less volume) version for around $29.
I'm still thinking about it.

I hadn't seen those, but the on wheels thing is a great idea. One
could pretty easily build such a thing with pressure treated boards
instead of redwood.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't possible unless their exploiting some
sort of IE bug or *you specifically let it* downbload something that
allwos it to scan your machine (or even more preposterous, Agent's
proprietary-formatted newsreader files).

Send me one link with a technical explanation of how this happens,
not a bunch of theories and gut-feelings. And a good recipe for
leather Nike's if it's true.
