It's the end of an era. Duke is shutting down its usenet server:

With apologies (yeah, right) to AlGore, wasn't Duke where the first usenet
server was set up? It's the end of an era, with historical significance.

Yes, the first news program ran at Duke.

Perhaps it is an end of Duke's era. But it's not the end of Usenet. That
was predicted several years ago. And guess what? We're still here

OB Food: Oxtail Soup

2 meaty oxtails, about 1-1/2 pounds each
1/4 c. vegetable oil
flour seasoned with salt & pepper
3 quarts water
1/2 c. chopped carrots
1 c. chopped celery
1 c. chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley

Dust oxtails with flour and brown in deep pot in oil. Add 2 quarts water, 1
tsp. salt and herb bouquet garni* (fresh parsley, bay leaf, marjoram or
thyme, 3-4 peppercorns in a cheesecloth bag).

Simmer on low about 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove oxtails to a
platter and let cool to the touch. Skim fat from soup. Remove meat from
oxtails and add back to the soup. Stir in remaining 1 quart water and the
vegetables. Simmer until
vegetables are tender. Remove bouquet garni bag. Taste the soup and adjust
seasonings. Stir in parsley and heat through.

Now _that's_ "total bullshit". A newbie dweeb would have no
interest in calling Duke, which he didn't even knew existed or it's
importance until today, just to confirm an obviously credible
story.

Sorry, Stewie. I ain't buying your brand of bullshit

When I just called you a "newbie dweeb" in the previous post, I gave
you way too much credit. But it does explain why you may have
called them.

BTW, Usenet will be down for a week following the Duke server
shutdown so that the routing tables onthe other servers can be
redefined. Posting during that time will just make the process take
longer. So please refrain from posting, stu, or you'll screw it up
for all of us.

LOL That's right up there with the one about blowing dust out of the phone
lines.

That's true, too. With the price of copper what it is now, they're
making hollow-core copper wires. The resulting surface area is 60%
greater allowing faster and clearer telephone and DSL
communications.

After installation of underground wiring, they have to blow out the
lines. And overhead lines are prone to condensation which attracts
dust.

It's bound to happen. Many universities have done away with their
usenent providers. With the advances of technology, "usenet" as most
folks know it, will cease Instead, it'll most likely be replaced
with something akin to Facebook and other popular "modern" interfaces,
eh? (SIGH) Dang, I'll miss usenet when it finally does bite the dust,
as happened with princess telephones, roadside telephone booths,
a-real-person-operator assistance, and etc. Such is "progress", eh?

I just called the CEO of Usenet, and he told me that anybody, who
sends $10 cash to his PO box, will be able to post freely during the
entire transition week.

That's what the Internet is: a series of hollow copper tubes.

Why don't we all just make each other BFFs and close Usenet?

So now we're backpeddling and you admit you didn't call, but somehow
attracted the attention of 3 different IT guys in online chat.

Uh-huh. What was the name of the server and channel?
