I'm not a breakfast person, but the once every couple of years or so
that I want to eat breakfast out... we go to Denny's. I don't have a
problem with the place. Remember the 99¢ Grand Slam breakfasts?

Oh I'll take Waffle House or Huddle House any day over Denny's!
Waffle House does a great hamburger at 8 am in the morning when I get
off work and am *starving*, but they don't have French fries. They do
hashbrowns. Huddle House does a good burger also but you have to tell
them you only want one patty on the burger (just too much meat for me
otherwise) and they do both white and sweet potato French fries. I never
eat breakfast food there but it certainly seems to satisfy the many
who do.

You didn't go to IHOP? It was pretty good back in the day.

YEP!

The best around 2:30 AM...... if you can get in. If the counter is full the
first table on the left is a community table. Any empty seat is open.

I will never forget or forgive Denny's corporate sponsored bigotry
against blacks. The restaurants in the D. C. area that turned their
lights out when groups of blacks arrived at night (they couldn't do
worse, the doors had no locks,) the well documented deliberate
lack of service to black groups, the sort of infamous time that
Denny's refused service for no reason to a group of Secret Service
employees seeking food in the dark hours. Great company and
I am amazed that it survived all of that. I can never walk into
a Denny's again.
The Secret Service bigotry, it was as recent as the 1990's:

If you mean the one in the next block from the Hotel Fig, that whole
area is getting squeaky clean with what the city council calls the
"Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment District." This includes the
newish Nokia Theater and now the big ole honkin' Marriot ("LA LIVE")
off the Pasadena Freeway.

OB: where do they find so many uniformly surly waiters at the Original
Pantry? The entire waitstaff is older men who act as if they've just
been notified that their next gig is Pelican Bay.

I agree, they do make very good, common breakfasts. I'm not often a
breakfast person but I would love to get the recipe for a slightly
lemon tasting sauce put over Tilapia that my local Dennys' makes. I
did once ask a waitress if it copuld be given, and she said they won't
even give it to her. ...Picky

I remember well that issue about blatant bigotry with regards to
Denny's, too. There were a few Denny's in my area from that 'era' that
did not survive - they permanently closed very soon afterwards, and even
then it took some years for its former building(s) to get revamped for
some other food franchise(s).

Sky

P.S. I cannot remember when I last dined at a Denny's - most likely not
since the aforementioned period.

If the franchises went out of business because they were operated by
narrow minded bigots, then I'm not sorry in the least. However, I'm
not painting Denny's with the same broad brush pavane and you are.

When it regards breakfast food and its quality, Perkins is up there with
Denny's in my book - not very good. That's the main reason I don't go
to Denny's - or Perkins. That there was bigotry at Denny's just added
to the my lack of enthusiasm to dine there.

Sky

P.S. sf, why didn't you also quote Pavane, whose comments prompted my
reply? Sometimes it's hard to know when to snip and when not to snip,

Denny's is ok. But I prefer Carrows especially for late night/breakfast.

I think Perkins must vary in quality like a lot of chains do. I love
going to my local Perkins, they make killer omelettes. As much as
I'd rather have a waffle, I don't feel deprived when I order an omelette,
and the ambiance is way better than Denny's.

Of course, I also love diners.

Originally the waiters/cooks & staff owned the place. When the original
owner died he left the place to the staff. In later years the owners voted
to sell the place to our ex-beloved-mayor-Richard Riordan.

IMHO the biggest advantage to Denny's is when you're driving through a
strange area on the way to someplace when you see the sign you know the food
is RELIABLE not great but reliable.

So, you're saying it's all ex-mayor Riordan's fault? Good thing I've
never heard of the place or I'd be sad too.

Isn't that true of most chains and why people patronize them?
You know what to expect--and avoid. But you also miss a lot of
good local places if you look for a chain.

If's not saying it's his fault but there is a big difference dealing with an
employee & an owner that has a vested interest in success.

My first trip to the Pantry was about 55 years ago as my father worked in
downtown LA. From then on in The Pantry has been a personal tradition. It
was a wonderful place to take non-Angelino's just like Tommy's, or Fairfax
district or or or or or or..... The same with NYC we all have places we
like to share.

I thought that was the idea behind most franchise operations. I can't
say that I have have ever been impressed with any of the fast food
restaurant franchises, so it puzzles me that some people actually claim
to like them and have their favourites. I rarely eat at any of them and
it has usually been more a matter of which is the least offensive.

That is not enough of an advantage for me to ever want to
eat at Denny's. It is healthfuler, cheaper and much more pleasant
to go to a grocery store, buy a yogurt and a bag of potato
chips and some nuts, and eat that in your car/motel room/tent.

And this scenario is even assuming you didn't plan ahead
and bring food with you on your road trip, which if you
did you are in even better shape.

I notice that a lot of the reviewers on yelp.com believe that they hire
ex-cons as waiters. I have no idea if that's true.

If they did, so what? Ex-cons probably have a better personality than
the waiters people are complaining about.

They don't have them here in SoCal, but when I lived in the Midwest,
we used to *love* Bob Evans for breakfast and Cracker Barrel wasn't
too bad, either. They both used to serve country ham, but the last
time I visited my on in Ohio, they were off the menu, dammit.

Most of the Denny's around us have folded and not a moment too soon if you
ask me. Was in one when all the ruckus was going on about being a 'racist'
environment. I'm in one, eat, at the register to pay where the manager was
running the register, a number of employees (place was almost empty) were
standing around laughing and joking with him...the ruckus being the topic.
When I responded to the 'was everything okay?' query, he noticed my
'accent'....I get, 'we'll after all, the place used to be called 'Sambo's'
remember?' wink wink chuckle chuckle. At that point I decided I would not

Isn't all ham from the country (except for politicians, that is)?

What would city ham look like, and taste like?

Uh, 'scuse me, but Denny's was never "Sambo's" with the legend of the
tigers that turned into butter. I'm old enough to remember that one.

That was House of Pancakes. Now known as "IHoP".

The original idea was that country ham could be stored for long periods
without refrigeration. When it was time to eat one, salt had to be
soaked out of it, as it was too salty to eat. City ham is ready to cook
without preparation, but must be kept refrigerated until then.

I think a lot of former Sambo's locations in my area suddenly became
Denny's (which is why Californian's associate Sambo's with Denny's)
and in your area they must have become IHOP.

Here's what I found in a quick google. Sambo's is not associated with
either Denny's or IHOP, but International Industries did franchise
Copper Penny which is/was a Denny's type chain. I don't know if it
still exists. The Copper Penny here became Lucky Penny years and
years ago and it is still in business.

Yeah. Seems different franchises morphed in different ways.
I have fond childhood memories of pancakes with lots of butter, and a
choice of 4 different syrups. ;-d

Maple, raspberry, grape and strawberry.

Strawberry being my favorite...

There is a good article about Sambo's on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo's

Attitudes about race take a long time to change and unfortunately, in
some people they will never change. However, the Denny's problem
happened almost 20 years ago. Sometimes you have to build a bridge...
and get over it.

I seldom eat at Denny's unless I am on a road trip. But I have noticed
in their restaurants here in the south that not only are the customers
minorities, but most of the employees (including management) are also
minorities.

Ah, so they just plain went out of business rather than "evolving". So
that lets Denny's off the hook.

I rarely ever eat there, but they are good for a decent cup or two of
coffee for a rest break during marathon road trips. I'll often drive 16
hours straight and it's the only time I ever actually drink coffee any
more. Red Bull during the drive helps too. ;-)
