July is National Ice Cream Month in the U.S. (according to a proclaimation
by President Ronald Reagan in 1984). So enjoy a scoop, a bowl, a cone, a sundae, maybe even a banana split this month! Sprinkles, no sprinkles... toppings or not. It's up to you. (My mother loved vanilla ice cream with gooey butterscotch topping.) Me, simply a scoop of coffee ice cream. What's yours? Jill |

There is much less air beaten into it, too. If you get the chance to choose, look for a sign saying "artigianale" because then only real flavors are used, whereas the ordinary gelateria may use mixes and you could do that yourself. The intensity of the flavor can be just stunning. |

At one ice cream stand, I usually get pistachio. Theirs is loaded with nuts, no food coloring, etc. Yum. At a now-defunct place, I would usually get the very intense chocolate pudding--a scoop of sweet cream was almost mandatory to offset this (and that from a chocoholic). At another place, I look for Burnt Caramel or Kulfi (which they also call cardamom-pistachio). And then there is mocha-almond (heavily tilted toward coffee, please). You would think with this list that I live on ice cream. No. I try to stay away and might have it twice a season. -- Jean B. |

The VP's office had asked me to arrange it "unofficially" so it would not show up on his schedule. We arranged for them to "run into" each other in the House. Mr. Gore is a HUGE Dead Head from his time in Viet Nam. The band arrived and I went to greet them and introduce their Secret Service escort. I myself had been more of a Stones and Poco fan, and didn't want to say I loved the music. So when we were chatting with Jerry Garcia, I said "I love your ties," which he seemed to appreciate. The USSS officer then said "And I love your ice cream." Jerry laughed and said, "Great! Of course you know I had nothing to do with it, but I can say that the day it came out was the happiest day in my lawyer's life." <http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:yk0KHcPPrLgJ:www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12037180/+%22happiest+day+in+my+lawyer%27s+life%22+garcia&c d=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a> your pal, pigpen |

I've made ice cream from wild blackberries and it's excellent but I didn't have a food mill at the time so it was a pita to eat. I've got a food mill now so I'll be making some soon. I've even got some black raspberries in the freezer from last year that need to be used. Lou |

I do *not* like cookie dough in ice cream, though. I'm the same way, Bob. No cookie dough, cake, cookies, etc. There is one exception though. I recently tasted Maple Blondie and I really liked it. The "blondie" pieces were very chewy and then I did not find them objectionable. I also hate nuts in ice cream, except when they are coated in chocolate or candy, thus maintaining their crunchiness. If they are just naked in the ice cream the get soggy and I hate that texture. On this particular island you can't find anything. LOL Unlike Hilton Head, there are no commercial shops here. There's one restaurant, 'Sweetgrass'. It's fairly new (the last one closed its doors rather quickly and this one hasn't been there more than 9 months, but I've read good reviews). Apparently they serve ice cream made fresh at the 'Berry Island Cafe'. I'd never heard of 'Berry Island Cafe' so I looked it up. Apparently it's on Lady's Island not far from where I shop for groceries. Hmmmm, looks like an interesting menu and they're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We'll have to check it out.
