Default A Day Late but Not an Ice Cream Cone Short

July is National Ice Cream Month in the U.S. (according to a proclaimation
by President Ronald Reagan in 1984). So enjoy a scoop, a bowl, a cone, a
sundae, maybe even a banana split this month! Sprinkles, no sprinkles...
toppings or not. It's up to you. (My mother loved vanilla ice cream with
gooey butterscotch topping.) Me, simply a scoop of coffee ice cream.
What's yours?

There is a bar/gelateria at the edge of the city as I drive home that makes
a black chocolate with chili peppers. It's simply astounding. I have
gelato once a year and it is usually that one.

I like dark chocolate ice cream with chunks of white chocolate and a fresh
raspberry sauce. I also like many of the Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors.
Standouts are Phish phood, Cherry Garcia, Karamel Sutra, Creme Brulee, and
Pistachio Pistachio. I do *not* like cookie dough in ice cream, though.

I've heard of but, never tried, gelato. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever
seen it offered in any place I've lived. But it always sounds delicious!

It's lower fat since cream rarely shows up in it, but eggs often do. There
is much less air beaten into it, too. If you get the chance to choose, look
for a sign saying "artigianale" because then only real flavors are used,
whereas the ordinary gelateria may use mixes and you could do that yourself.
The intensity of the flavor can be just stunning.

That depends on who is making the ice cream. At one ice cream
stand, I usually get pistachio. Theirs is loaded with nuts, no
food coloring, etc. Yum.

At a now-defunct place, I would usually get the very intense
chocolate pudding--a scoop of sweet cream was almost mandatory to
offset this (and that from a chocoholic).

At another place, I look for Burnt Caramel or Kulfi (which they
also call cardamom-pistachio).

And then there is mocha-almond (heavily tilted toward coffee, please).

You would think with this list that I live on ice cream. No. I
try to stay away and might have it twice a season.

here's a cherry garcia story, sort of:

Your Dead review reminded me of their visit to the White House during the
Clinton years. The VP's office had asked me to arrange it "unofficially"
so it would not show up on his schedule. We arranged for them to "run
into" each other in the House. Mr. Gore is a HUGE Dead Head from his time
in Viet Nam. The band arrived and I went to greet them and introduce their
Secret Service escort. I myself had been more of a Stones and Poco fan,
and didn't want to say I loved the music. So when we were chatting with
Jerry Garcia, I said "I love your ties," which he seemed to appreciate.
The USSS officer then said "And I love your ice cream." Jerry laughed and
said, "Great! Of course you know I had nothing to do with it, but I can say
that the day it came out was the happiest day in my lawyer's life."

I worked outside for a couple hours last night and by the time I came
inside, around 7 or so, I wasn't hungry for anything normal, so I had
some chocolate ice cream for supper. It was perfect, after working in
85-90 degrees!

I can't remember the last time I had a cone. I have ice cream once a
year but my first choice would be caramel pecan in a waffle cone. I
also like raspberry sherbet. I've made ice cream from wild
blackberries and it's excellent but I didn't have a food mill at the
time so it was a pita to eat. I've got a food mill now so I'll be
making some soon. I've even got some black raspberries in the freezer
from last year that need to be used.

You just can't beat a really good vanilla. Hagen Daz, Ben & Jerry and the
like. I like most of the fruit flavors and a good chocolate, but probably
50% or more of what I eat is vanilla. No toppings needed.

every day and gelato every day. Vita è buona.

One of my favorites is really rich dark chocolate ice cream
with marshmallow topping. I'm a nut for marshmallow topping.

And a nice big bowl of my homemade strawberry or peach ice
cream topped with more strawberries or peaches is to die for.

And then there's Baskin-Robbins Love Potion #31! I love that
stuff.

B&J's Phish Food, Karamel Sutra, Turtle Soup, and Maple Blondie.

I'm the same way, Bob. No cookie dough, cake, cookies, etc. There
is one exception though. I recently tasted Maple Blondie and I really
liked it. The "blondie" pieces were very chewy and then I did not find
them objectionable.

I also hate nuts in ice cream, except when they are coated in chocolate
or candy, thus maintaining their crunchiness. If they are just naked in
the ice cream the get soggy and I hate that texture.

The best vanilla I ever had was in Tokyo. Looks like I'll be
going to Tokyo in October. I'd better not get my hopes up that
this vanilla still exists (ca 27 years later).

The Friendly's headquarters is in Wilbraham, MA. All the stand alone
restaurants around here have a walk up window for ice cream. For the most
part, it is decent enough stuff, but they do have a very good pistachio and
Forbidden Chocolate.

They charge plenty of $$$ for a few pennies of slush. Many of the ice cream
places close for the winter. A stand in our town opens mid-May and the last
day is Labor Day. They do work long hours in summer though, open 7 days, 12
hours a day.

The price of a single dip of ice cream at a lot of stands costs about the
same as a container at the supermarket. Hefty markup.

Frusen Gladje made the best vanilla ice cream. My mother raved about how
good Haagen Dazs was until I convinced her to try them side by side. Sadly,
Haagen Dazs threatened supermarkets that they'd pull all their products off
the shelves unless the markets stopped carrying Frusen Gladje, so Frusen
Gladje went out of business.

On this particular island you can't find anything. LOL Unlike Hilton Head,
there are no commercial shops here. There's one restaurant, 'Sweetgrass'.
It's fairly new (the last one closed its doors rather quickly and this one
hasn't been there more than 9 months, but I've read good reviews).
Apparently they serve ice cream made fresh at the 'Berry Island Cafe'. I'd
never heard of 'Berry Island Cafe' so I looked it up. Apparently it's on
Lady's Island not far from where I shop for groceries. Hmmmm, looks like an
interesting menu and they're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We'll
have to check it out.

I see 'Panini's' in downtown Beaufort has gelato on their dessert menu, so,
there *is* a gelato option only 30 minutes away

It is hard for me to imagine the lifestyle there, Jill. Are you
connected to the mainland by a bridge? How far do you have to go
to shop?

News to me... I'd not heard that.
I did not like Frusen Gladje anyway. It was too crystaly and not
anywhere near as creamy.

Sounds like you got some which had melted and been re-frozen. If handled
properly, it was a helluva lot more creamy than Haagen-Dazs.

What's stunning is the intensity of your stupidity. When flavor is
more intense than normal then it's artificial... Gelato a la Carvel!

White chocolate and raspberry ice creams swirled with a raspberry ribbon
and loaded with raspberry-filled cups and chocolate chips.

I used to eat both of them and I could not tell the difference
between them. Both excellent though.

That sounds interesting. I'll have to try to forget I saw any

I almost never look. About once every two years I wander into a
BR hoping to see it. Maybe some good samaritan here can tell us
if they ever see it, and then I will hie to a BR and buy a quart
or so.
