Anyone here a member of "Cooking Club of America"? I got mail from
them today. My first thought was "Sounds like a scam". But it's "only" $1 a month. Of course, I'd want to pay that all in one lump sum, last thing I need to have to do is remember to pay another monthly bill! $12/year, you get a monthly magazine, $100 worth of coupons for groceries, and if you test any of their products, you get to keep them and just send back a survey. I know someone who claims she got a set of pots for free, and a few other items, from them. At any rate, part of me is wondering "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" and part of me is thinking "maybe it's not a scam. Free stuff is free stuff". The mailing they sent is high on hype--lots of great buzz words they hope will hook you but there's not a lot of detail and I know that's intentional. So if anyone has any experience with this "club", would like to hear about it. Thanks |

The mag is bi-monthly, 6 a year, and they tell you you can try things for them. I've done a few....they send coupons for food items free, you make them and rate them. So far I haven't been asked about any of the 'good' things.....mixers, bowls, ovens, etc. It's so-so on the recipes. Similar in type to Taste of Home, which in my opinion, is superior to CCA. Also, if you take one of those, you get ads to 'join' all their 'sister' clubs, Hunting, Handyman, etc. -ginny |

Not that great. I searched about them on Chowhound and there some very unkind things said about it. I'm going to pass. I hate Taste of Home magazine. So if that's better than Cooking Club's magazine, it would be a waste of time and $12. Thanks, Ginny |

But it's "only" $1 a month. Their other company is Handyman Club. It is quite the joke for any serious DIYer or real handyman. Save your buck a month. |

It's listed as a scam in many places. |

I was bombarded with "free" and "low cost" offers every time the mail came. In addition they sell your address and info to every scam artist in the world. I would stay away from anything to do with them myself. |

Collection of recipes? Not a bad thing, IMO. I don't read cuisine magazines for the ads and articles, I read them for the recipes. I signed up for Taste of Home recipes by email; which are not any better or worse than my other recipe email. Example: <http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/Mexican-Shrimp-Salad?pmcode=IKEDV04T&_mid=586200&_rid=586200.2883 00.11857> Mexican Shrimp Salad 4 Servings Prep: 20 min. + marinating Grill: 10 min. Ingredients * 1 small onion, halved and thinly sliced * 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro * 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped * 2 tablespoons canola oil * 2 teaspoons chili powder * 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin * 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander * 1/2 teaspoon pepper * 1/4 teaspoon salt * 1 pound uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and deveined * 6 cups torn leaf lettuce * 1/2 cup fat-free ranch salad dressing Directions * In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the first nine ingredients; add shrimp. Seal bag and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. * Thread shrimp onto four metal or soaked wooden skewers; discard onion mixture. Using long-handled tongs, dip a paper towel in cooking oil and lightly coat the grill rack. * Grill shrimp, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from the heat for 3-4 minutes on each side or until shrimp turn pink. * Divide lettuce among four plates; top with shrimp. Serve immediately with dressing. Yield: 4 servings. Editor's Note: When cutting hot peppers, disposable gloves are recommended. Avoid touching your face. Nutrition Facts: 1 serving equals 218 calories, 9 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 168 mg cholesterol, 716 mg sodium, 15 g carbohydrate, 3 g fiber, 20 g protein. Diabetic Exchanges: 3 very lean meat, 1-1/2 fat, 1 vegetable, 1/2 starch. Mexican Shrimp Salad published in Healthy Cooking June/July 2008, p19 -- Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get. |

I used to get their "Light" magazine. Their idea of "diabetic" recipes was to take out sugar and insert artificial sweetener. No regard whatsoever for total carbohydrate or fat contents. After writing to their editor twice and being ignored, I canceled. Reiman Publications did have some nice magazines. We especially liked Country Discoveries. I actually got paid for several submissions even though I was a subscriber. -- Janet Wilder Way-the-heck-south Texas Spelling doesn't count. Cooking does. |
