Yes they do and when a fire comes along it burns half the state which doe sfar more damage than any burning off does. They seem to think bush fires are un natural but hwta they fail to understand is nature often causes bush fires by itself with lightning strikes. Next they'll be against lightning which creates ozone. Lol. |

Burning off doesn't protect against bush fires. It may protect against the severity of bushfires. Some bush fires are just going to happen regardless. Plenty of homes on cleared land with no trees for hundreds of metres were destroyed during the Feb 09 bushfires in East Kilmore. Nev.. '08 DL1000K8 |

I'd have thought the record temperatures, high wind, drought, building codes, stay-or-go policy, lack of updates from the fire service, slow response, lightning strikes/arson etc etc would carry *at least* some responsibility for the deaths... but hey, that's your belief... -- Lee |

Of course ALL the things above contributed to the fires. But the reality is that if the Greens didn't block the back burning, none of these other issues you raised above would have been sufficient to cause 200 or more unnecessary deaths. |

Plenty of homes with few or no trees for dozens or hundreds of metres around were lost in the Feb 09 fires. There are plenty of other hazards around. In perspective, one catastrophic fire in Victoria each 25 years cost fewer than 200 lives per occurance. During the same 25 years 50,000 Victorians have died from cancer, close to 10,000 from suicide, 7,500 in road accidents... etc etc Protecting people from fires is given far more emphasis than is probably warranted.
