Certainly the Blue Bell we get here in the Dallas area beats the Dryer's / Breyer's and the like by a *wide* margin. Blue Bunny also tends to beat the Dryer's / Breyer's as well, but not Blue Bell. Braum's ice cream beats Blue Bell, but it has an even smaller market area. |

None of the ice creams mentioned is all that good to begin with. Was expecting something utterly fantastic from Blue Bell and it just wasn't there. It just didn't taste any different. |

Realize that Blue Bell is a normal ice cream and one that is notably better than pretty much all the other mass market normal ice creams. It has less overrun, is still a real half gallon, and is good overall quality. It is not advertised to be a "super premium" or "all natural" ice cream. |

Yep, Sonic does, as does Steak-n-Shake. But, the 'shakes' at both places are still not the 'real' thing - close, though! I used to ask for extra malt, but since the main ingredients were poor imitations, the result was left wanting. My favorite is full sugar, full fat, Southern Blackberry Cobbler followed by Banana Split, followed by Banana Pudding. |

I make my own in the blender, I don't have an old Hamilton Beach malt maker. My paternal grandmother ran a malt and burger shop across the street from a high school for years. I was the soda jerk there as my high school's holidays were different from the one near her shop. Had the old malt mixer with six stands on it. Grannie got on my case about too much ice cream in the malts because those girls in the pleated wool skirts and the cashmere sweaters MADE me put extra ice cream in them. This was in the fifties, wore the paper cap, bow tie, and sleeve garters too. Great fun back then, even though I worked for free, the owner being my grannie and all. |

Blue Bell makes a cherry cordial ice cream that is cherry flavored with little chocolate covered cherry cordials in it. They don't make it all the time, but I used to love it when I could taste more than the first bite of ice cream. BTW, I've toured the Blue Bell ice cream factory at least a half-dozen times and I'm always mesmerized by that machine that makes ice cream sandwiches. -- Janet Wilder Way-the-heck-south Texas Spelling doesn't count. There's really no such thing as a low carb ice cream unless you make it yourself so they are all "lower" rather than "low", but they worked on a low carb plan every so often. And frozen it lasted in the freezer for the months between servings. No that low carb ice cream isn't everywhere and I'm not consistant about low carbing, comparing their regular ice cream head to head with Eddys or other brands regularly available takes more attention to detail than I spend on ice cream. I've never done a blind tasting to compare ice cream brand to brand like I have with some products. |

When SO and I went to Oregon two years ago we stopped at Burgerville for lunch and ordered a small raspberry shake. Between the two of us, we could not finish it. Here's some of their ingredients, copied and pasted from their website: "Mono & Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Artificial and Natural Flavors, Sodium Phosphate, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Citrate, Polysorbate 80, Carrageenan." Even Braum's has : "stabilizer blend (monoglycerides, cellulose gel, cellulose gum, carrageenan)." How come they need that crap, but Haagen-Dasz doesn't? Crappy. --Bryan |

And, actually, it's spelled Haagen Dazs, and it's not that good. Rite Aide sells Thrifty Ice Cream that is both less expensive than your ridiculously priced Haagen Dazs and is a very fine ice cream. The sherbet isn't so good, however.
