We don't have a toaster, but we do have a toaster oven that makes fine
toast, tuna melts, and the like. My favorite use for it is for what we call cheese toast - piece of bread, topped with sharp cheddar plus a little garlic powder and brown pepper, cooked in the toaster oven until the cheese is golden and bubbly, usually at 400 degrees for 3 minutes or so. We have a microwave. My wife says she'd like to have one less of these in our none-too-big kitchen, and directs me to ask here, so here I am. Would, e.g., a combo convection oven and microwave do what we need? I guess one question is really whether a convection oven can take the place of a toaster oven - we've never owned a convection oven. Specific brand/model recommendations appreciated. Thanks in advance. -S- |

Bought the first one in 1981, replaced it with the newer one about six years ago when the tube went out on the old one. Get the carousel version, makes everything cook much thoroughly. I've had to replace the carousel motor once since we bought this one. Looked at a manual online, ordered the eight buck part online, replaced it myself just as easy as anything. Good rig for cooking about anything. I've done twelve-pound turkeys in it, broiled steaks, roasted a chicken, have done whole meals in the thing when I didn't want to fire up the big stove. Wouldn't be without one. Never owned a toaster oven so can't compare the two. |

That sucker cost $900 with a service contract. Expect to pay $600 and up for a convection microwave unit. When we got the oven, it looked like someone drove a forklift through the side of the box and the oven was dented. We returned that and since time was important, we grabbed a $300 non-convection unit. A microwave/convection oven is a cool appliance but on reflection, I think that we wouldn't really use that feature much. Get one of those if you have the cash. Alternatively, you could get a over-the-stove mounted microwave or a toaster oven that mounts underneath a cabinet to save some space - personally, I think that mounting these up to near eye level greatly increases their utility. |

As for the mike, I could make do with the teakettle, as I only use the mike to heat water, and once in a while, a reheat of leftovers. The t.o. I use at least twice a day - for toast, topbrowning, baked spuds. |

I seem to be the only one who actually had a combination microwave
convection oven. Mine was in the motorhome we sold a few years back (the one I hated). Here's what I found to be the problem with it: You have to preheat it to use it as an oven. It blasts a bunch of heat back into the room while it is doing this (unless you have a way to vent it) I did not care for it at all because of the warm up time and the heat. I have a friend who has had one for many years and she loves hers, however, so there are people who do find it useful. I didn't. I have the convection feature on my Cuisineart toaster oven and I use it on convection quite often. It makes cooking a little faster and uses a lower temp. It doesn't take as long as the microwave/convection to heat up and it doesn't spew blasts of heat into my kitchen. -- Janet Wilder Way-the-heck-south Texas Spelling doesn't count. Cooking does. |

Which one could you do without. We have a microwave/convection oven. Rarely use the convection part even before we bought the range with regular/convection stove. We use the toaster oven all the time. Convection oven does not toast or broil. -- Susan N. "Moral indignation is in most cases two percent moral, 48 percent indignation, and 50 percent envy." Do you want a single appliance that is both a toaster oven and a microwave oven? If so the answer is no. As you know, toaster ovens radiate heat from top and abottom heating elements. There isn't any product that does this and is also a microwave. Kent |

Here's 810 appliances, some of which do roughly what Steve wants: http://www.amazon.com/Ovens-Toasters...=amb_link_1013 49822_38?ie=UTF8&node=289933&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER &pf_rd_s=gp-center-5&pf _rd_r=0NHQRR529BY360XZT8S9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=439 471022&pf_rd_i=289913#% 2Fref%3Dsr_nr_p_36_4%3Frh%3Dn%253A1055398%252Cn%25 3A%25211063498%252Cn%25 3A284507%252Cn%253A289913%252Cn%253A289933%252Cp_3 6%253A1253527011%26bbn% 3D289933%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1284951257%26rnid%3D3 86465011&enc=1 The only one I looked at is a convection/microwave oven on the first page. It has a broiler, so it will make the "cheese toast" that Steve likes. Of course, if he just sets the oven at 400F for 3 minutes, then any of the convection ovens will do this. I would back this up with a conventional two slice toaster, which doesn't take a lot of space. I can't answer Steve's basic question, though, since I've never had one. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

It cooks exactly like an old fashion toaster, except there is a couple of inches between the heating elements and the heating elements are horizontally positioned above and below the grate. The true toaster oven must have this configuration to be called that. There isn't any product that has the toaster oven as above combined with a microwave heating element. There are microwave convection and microwave grills and microwave convection grills. None of them have the required above and below grate heating elements. My primary reason to have a true toaster oven is because that is the only way to reheat leftover pizza. Nothing else works. You have to have heat from the bottom and from the top. The cheese melts on top, and the crusts regains its crispness on the bottom. Kent |

It works in both functions but heats unevenly in both modes and the microwave function is decidedly underpowered. I dunno if newer models are more satisfactory, however generally a do-it-all tool does everything less well than separate tools that are purpose-made. If you have a satisfactory microwave and a satisfactory toaster oven already I can't see any good reason to spend money on an all-in-one. |
