World Series Party at my house Sunday night!!!!!
Menu needs to be stereotypical Boston foods. Or baseball foods. Cardinals fans not welcome at my house! :-) Neither are Baby Ruth candy bars right now. Why take chances and possibly **** off the Ghosts???? LOL So far I have planned the following: -Boston Baked Beans from Fanny Farmer's cookbook (the recipe is virtually the same as Durgin Park's, except the quantity is more manageable) -Grilled Hot dogs on New England style, split-top buns with all the trimmings. -Peanuts and Cracker Jack to munch on during the game (along with veggies, chips and dips) -homemade (vinegar based) cole slaw (which isn't particularly Bostonian nor is it particularly baseball-ian, but it goes nicely with hot dogs and beans!) Recipe from 2nd Ave Deli. (it's been posted here before) -Dessert will be Brigham's "Reverse the curse" ice cream, if I can find it. According to the Brigham's website, one of my local supermarkets carries it. I don't even care what actual flavor "Reverse the curse" is, it's a symbolic thing!!!!! Perhaps some Boston Cream Pie if I can't find that particular flavor. Sam Adams beer. I am particularly fond of their Octoberfest. Will probably offer the Light, the Boston Ale and the Octoberfest. I'll see what I can get at the packy. What else am I missing? I'm thinking about other appetizers, food that is simple to eat either out of hand or without cutting, but have a Boston or baseball "ring" to them. Any other ideas? |

However, not dogs notwithstanding, I'd also have Boston Brown Bread with the beans. > -Grilled Hot dogs on New England style, split-top buns with all the > trimmings. > > -Peanuts and Cracker Jack to munch on during the game > (along with veggies, chips and dips) > > -homemade (vinegar based) cole slaw (which isn't particularly > Bostonian nor is it particularly baseball-ian, but it goes nicely with > hot dogs and beans!) They've been serving sausages in buns in Coney Island (Brooklyn) New York since 1867. And German immigrants sold them in the Bowery (Lower East Side of Manhattan) since before that. http://whatscookingamerica.net/Histo...og/HDIndex.htm True, it was in St. Louis that someone thought to serve them at a baseball game, but hell...what's that got to do with anything? I swear, why some people have to be so MEAN about the Boston Red Sox--it's inexplicable. |

Sunflower seeds, in the shell, are a staple in the dugouts! At least in the Minor leagues. They go through cases of those things! The players chomp on them in the dugout and spit the seeds out. Kinda gross, but some players use sunflower seeds instead of the chewing tobacco. Peanuts IN the shell for sure. Which I hate eating at home because they make such a mess. I mentioned that, though. Peanuts and Cracker Jack. Gotta have those! > > That said, watching baseball at home foods are far different from ballpark > foods. True, but I'm trying to recreate the ballpark ambiance! LOL |

I've been to 3 major league ballparks this year alone to see the Mets, Red Sox and Phillies, and there were those "pseudo nachos" at all 3. Yankee stadium, too, as I recall, it's been 3 years though since I was there, so that may have changed. And all the minor league parks I've ever been to serve them. (3 different parks this season alone, 5 others over the years) Corn chips w/cheez glop is a staple ballpark snack. Notice I didn't say "food". I am going for ballpark ambiance, but even my non-foody-baseball-loving friends draw the line at fake cheeze! I have never been to a professional sporting event, major or minor league, in fact, that did not serve some sort of chips and cheeze glop and call it nachos. If I do make nachos, it will be with monterey jack and sharp cheddar. Might just have to settle for chips and salsa. Or Cool ranch Doritoes! (My personal weakness) |

You must not go to many US ballparks. I've certainly seen that horrible concoction mistakenly labeled "nachos" in several parks. |

The only thing "Boston" about that is the name. If you're eating that in Boston, it's a Sub. If you eat it in Connecticut, it's a Grinder and in NYC, it's a Hero. And if you're eating it in Philadelphia, it's a Hoagie. Wherever there are Italian Americans, there is a sandwich like that. Only thing differs from city to city is the name. And now I want one!
