![]() Ugh, it's that time of year again. I walked into a supermarket the other day to be smacked in the face with the scent of those incredibly horrible fake-cinnamon scented pine cones that are sold in mesh bags between now and Christmas. Just thinking about the nasty odor gives me the shivers. They are often displayed in bins either in the floral or produce department and they cause me to walk right by too quickly to see what else is in the area. Has anyone else noticed these and are you equally as grossed out? gloria p |

I've seen them, but matters not to me. I picked up my own pinecones about 25 years ago, rolled em in Elmer's, then in silver glitter and haul em out every year. I dump em in a wooden fruit bowl and voila - my cheapo winter centerpiece. |

Yup, but then remember the CA study that showed that pumpkin pie spice was the main cause of birth spikes annually. THe peak birth periods in hospitals is about Aug 15-Sept 15. Count back 9 months, and guess where you are. A researcher in CA also tested (you don't want to know how!!) men to measure sexual arousal against olfactory stimulation. What won? Cinnamon rolls and pumpkin pie! I suspect a conspiracy. Alex |

They sell them here but I like them! In fact I bought some when we first moved in and that would be 6 years ago. They have lost most of their scent by now. You can't smell them unless you are right on top of them. |

Oh how I hate those candle shops! I used to make scented candles and many years ago I burned candles frequently. I was a smoker back then. I can not stand to be around scented candles now, particularly if they are burning. Daughter and I also have very different tastes when it comes to scents. She loves to sniff the scented candles. I know now when she thrusts something under my nose and tells me to smell it, I should run! |

The smell, which I am sure someone, somewhere thought would be a delightful holiday fragrance, instead smells overwhelmingly and oppressively artificial. TH and I commented to each other about it as we walked by, thinking we must be the oddballs who don't like it. Nice to know we're not nuts. Boron |

Why would anyone want cinnamon scented pine cones?!?!? Pine cones are supposed to smell of pine! I can go outside right now and scoop up all the fresh cones I can carry, the chipmonks pile them up neatly under the conifers after extracting the seeds. |

We don't have any in the city that charge for using plastic or paper that I am aware of. I do think that would be a good idea. It would encourage people to use the reusable ones. We do have one chain of stores that enters you in a drawing for free groceries if you use your own bags.

I smell fresh cow manure and it brings me back to visits to the country as a kid so I like it. My wife winkles her nose. Yesterday I smelled manure spread on gardens then rained on and my nose wrinkled. My wife didn't even notice. We drove past an oil refinery and her nose wrinkled. I smelled it, thought of so many folks with good paying jobs and I smiled. I think it also reminded me of visiting Dad at work when I was a kid, too. The type of heavy oil used by mechanics. The range of reactions is smaller for foods but it's very real. |

Not sure I'd want it all the time either, but I don't do that to my house anyway. If they relied on me to stay in business, that industry wouldn't exist. -- Never trust a dog to watch your food. |
