Hey, darling rfc foodies:
The folks who ran that gluten-free challenge (the reason I moved Thanksgiving) are giving away a bunch of stuff if you're willing to make a gluten-free dish for Thanksgiving and writing about it. If you don't have a blog, I'd be happy to post it for you (under your name; you get the prize, not me). More at http://www.momfoodproject.com/2010/1...-thanksgiving/ Serene -- http://www.momfoodproject.com |

You're not required to do Thanksgiving. You're required to make Thanksgiving food. I can make foods from other countries without actually celebrating their holidays, yes? But if you don't have celiac or an allergy to it there is no reason to give it up. |

That should be a good lesson about never bringing up Thanksgiving again, young lady. No point in anyone being culturally aware. You were also being insensitive to the Canadians - whose Thanksgiving is a different month and day from ours.... Let's not even get into Boxing Day or Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night. ![]() -- Never trust a dog to watch your food. |

Basically I have a mental filter of what is food and what is poison. My filter has a different list than yours. I eat the food and avoid the poison. There are times when I don't even notice that there was poison present. I figure my dietary restrictions are my issue so I never expect anyone to plan ahead for them. Sometimes that means I pick the leaves out of the salad and that's what I eat. No big deal. Not really any different from how anyone with special dietary restrictions has to function. It gets easier with practice. Ten years in I've had plentiful practice. |

I don't know about that. I spent most of my life as a vegetarian and often found it difficult to get a meal. I don't have to avoid gluten myself, but I have other food allergies. Daughter has to avoid gluten. So for the most part it is just easier for me to avoid it too. For instance, most gluten free pasta has no eggs. And I can't have eggs. |

Most did not know how to do a vegetarian diet and simply pushed me to eat meat. They seem to be big on chicken. I guess they figure that they like it so I should too. |

So I did a search and thought I was on the right page because it did belong to GF girl and was about Thanksgiving. Only when I put her name in and the word "giveaway" did I get the correct page. |

Not to mention that she likes meat and is gluten >> intolerant. > > Well, that's just shitty. It's not rocket science to make good, > gluten-free vegetarian food! What I think is funny is that there is so much good food out there that is naturally gluten free. But people who are preparing gluten free food for people don't seem to know this. When daughter went away to camp with her school she came home starving and sick to her stomach. They did have gluten free bread for her. They made her a sandwiches for lunch. For breakfast they just assumed she could have the eggs and an apple. The other kids got things like pancakes and cinnamon rolls. They didn't even bother to offer her any bread then. Dinner was chicken and potatoes one night and then the same gluten free pasta the other nights. Again, no bread offered even though there was bread for the other kids. They provided snacks for the other kids which were not safe for her. So what did she eat? Apples, apples and more apples. To the point of being sick. I would have happily sent in safe food for her to eat, especially at snack time. And there were a lot of snacks because they were hiking and doing survival skill type things. But the camp rule was that nobody was allowed to bring in any food. I did not go along for three reasons. One, I am disabled and feared I would not be able to keep up with the others. Just going along wasn't an option. You had to be a group leader. Two I have my own food allergies and that would further complicate things. And three I have diabetes and was on insulin by then. So I figured having me along would be a hinderance. Had I been there, I would have sneaked some food along for her. But instead, my husband went. He is not a rule breaker. |

We have to avoid a lot of vegetarian > foods 'cause just about every damned thing has some kind of wheat or > wheat gluten in it. But there is sometimes an animal product that you can't see. For instance, lard in refried beans. Or chicken or beef broth used in vegetables, rice or pasta. For me that wasn't so much of a problem. The main reason I wasn't eating meat was that I don't digest it well. I can eat refried beans, no problem. But... I once went to a Mexican place (chain place, forget the name) and my dad mentioned to the waitress that I was a vegetarian. She freaked and pretty much said the only safe thing I could have was the black beans. When I said the refried beans would be fine, she refused to serve them to me. I was more than a little annoyed with my dad. I was an adult then and capable of ordering for myself. > >> >> I don't have to avoid gluten myself, but I have other food allergies. >> Daughter has to avoid gluten. Then when diagnosed with allergies to egg and dairy, vegan. But now I have to eat some meat because I kept getting anemic. I do not digest meat well which was the initial problem. I find I can have lean ground beef, and chicken (although I mostly do not like chicken). Can also have turkey but again don't like it. I occasionally have tuna. I'm sure other fish would be fine except that I don't like it. I can not eat soy except for occasional soybean oil and things like soy lecithin. I had to give up soy beans, soy protein and the like because it caused a thyroid problem for me. Back in the day I really did eat a lot of soy. I would buy the beans and roast them for snacks. I ate Tiger's Milk bars at my job. I was working at a golf course at the time with a bunch of pregnant women. There was one guy, but other than him I think I was the only one for a while who was not pregnant. Seemed they were always getting sick or going to the Dr. or something. So I might go in at 5:00 a.m. and not get out of there till after 8:00 p.m. I brought the bars so I would have something to eat if I wasn't able to get a meal. I also ate a lot of those soy and other vegetable type patties and soy bacon. When I learned of the connection to thyroid and soy, I gave it all up. |

She loves things that come in individual packets. I guess such foods were not so common when I was a kid. I know I could make something and put it in a packet, but to her that is not the same. So I am always trying to find things she can eat. Her current favorite are little packets of salami and some apple bars. |
