--Buffalo meat? I'm in a hotel that serves buffalo cheeseburgers. That
in itself seems obscene, but the meat is cooked in A-1 meat sause. I
tried the burger and hated it. Not sure if it was beccause of the meat
or the A-1 sauce, or both. Buffalo is supposed to have less fat; does
that also mean less taste?

A1 Steak Sauce can sometimes be very overwhelming, especially if one
isn't used to it. It'd be better to first try the ground buffalo meat
with the A1 instead.

I had some buffalo steaks the other night, and they were delicious. In
order to try something, it is advisable to eat a bit that is not laced with
garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, lemon pepper, beau monde, allspice,
coriander, cinnamon and A-1 sauce just so you can get an honest idea of what
it really tastes like. The barbecue grilling added a little flavor to it,
but I intentionally cooked it without any spices to get an idea of the real
taste.

Do you mean bison? I've heard it's very good indeed.

Less fat doesn't mean less taste -- venison and kangaroo are very lean
but both have a lot of flavour.

I wouldn't, but my entire family eats it and loves it.

I can remember when I was a kid, some local steakhouse had a live buffalo
out back for some long time. It was all a build up to a promotion they were
having to serve buffalo burgers.

My brother really wanted to eat a buffalo burger. We went there one night
for dinner and were told they were out of buffalo burgers. My brother just
cried and cried. He was probably 3 at the time.

A little time went by and then the waitress came back to the table and told
my brother that they had found one last buffalo burger. That placated him.
He was happy. What they served him was a hamburger. They just told him it
was buffalo.

I knew enough not to fall for that. My mom had served me liver and told me
it was steak. She served me something mashed...either turnips or rutabaga
and told me it was potatoes. So to me, any food was suspect unless I had
seen the package it came from and perhaps watched it being prepared.
Perhaps this is why I learned to cook at a young age.

Anyway... Buffalo meat is pretty popular here in WA. I don't know popular
it is in restaurants, but my parents never have any trouble finding it to
eat at their house. It is leaner than beef.

As in again? Sure. Normal stuff.

So you're a person who thinks eating chicken is adventurous. Understand
that there are people who think eating meat from assorted critters is
normal.

What a way to screw up a perfectly good burger. Cooking bison should
not be much different from cooking beef.

Grain fed critters have less taste. Range fed critters have more taste.
Younger cirrters have less taste but are more tender. Older critters
have more taste but are tougher.

Bison, being mostly grain fed and slaughtered young, generally don't
have more flavor than most beef. Slightly different but not more. I
might call the difference in the flavor something like tang.

Absolutely, but leave off the "A1" sauce. I like the taste of meat.
Buffalo was really popular around here because there were buffalo
ranches nearby. Then maybe 5 years ago Ted Turner bought them and had
them shipped to Montana or whatever state he owns.

I love bison meat, but I wouldn't eat it if it was cooked in A-1. Too
much sodium.

The first time I had buffalo was on Catalina island off Los Angeles on a
college excursion (except the wings - I grew up in Buffalo ;^). Buffalo
burgers are lean and as a result they have a bit less flavor than beef
burgers. Buffalo chili rocks.

Decades ago a cowboy movie had been shot on the island. Bisons were
brought there as props. When the movie was finished the Bisons were
released into the wild. They thrived and are now locally ranched on the
island.

Oh yeah! My dad told me that pregnant women swallowed watermelon seeds. So
I was terrified of watermelons.

We eat bison meat from time to time. A burger is never the best way to
judge any meat. Adding a strongly-flavoured sweetish sauce doesn't help
either.

Try an unadorned bison steak and then see how you like it.

Well, why not? I've had it a number of times. It tends to be very
dry though so it depends on how you cook it. And it doesn't seem
to have much flavor. It's fairly innocuous.

Any buffalo meat I've eaten has been delicious. I'm not fond of A-1
sauce. <shrug>
