Default Thai granite mortar and pestle vs. others that looks like it but porous

Here is the thai one which is not porous at all:
http://www.amazon.com/Stone-Granite-...ref=pd_sim_k_3

I saw one at marshall that is from China and made of granite where the
outside and the rim is smooth but inside is rough. The packaging
instructs not to immerse in water and to wipe clean due to it's porous
nature. I bought it (for $12.99). At home, when I cleaned the inside
with a wet cloth, I noticed the dust. Makes me wonder the dust would
keep coming off with the grinding. Not that I would use regularly but
if I use it, it'd be for grinding things like papaya salad.

This one at amazon said it's no porous though it is small (though good
price; I do not want to pay over $30) but it is out of stock.

Rocks and minerals are good for you. I think you need more rocks
in your diet. They're brain food in your case.

I've always said you had rocks between your ears.

I wonder if the Chinese have figured out a way to make composite
granite. They've been making composite marble for decades. It's
basically an epoxy resin impregnated with marble dust. Marble
countertops for restrooms and cheapo M&Ps have been made of fake
marble for years.

That sounds bogus. Sure, granite will absorb moisture. Think of
exploding granite river rocks, but they've been submerged underwater
for who knows how long. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I wash
mine occasionally, but basically I jes dust the last spice powder out.
It's not like you're leaving it in the water to soak, overnight, or
that granite absorbs water instantly like a sponge. It doesn't. You
wanna see some real stone dust, try a molcajete, a Mexican M&P.
You'll be spitting gravel and tooth fragments for a week.

As for the whole curry paste thing, Thai's use a different sort of M&P
for that, anyway. I had one (pottery mortar and wood pestle) and I've
made green curry from scratch. Don't bother. You can buy excellent
curry pastes off the shelf.

Gee Paul, you catch on pretty quick. That's incredible. Really.
And all that before 5:AM? You must get even better as the day goes
on.

I've never seen anyone in Thailand making som tum with that type of
mortar and pestle -- That mortar and pestle is used for grinding and
mixing spices and pastes like nam prik or curry pastes. It would destroy
shredded papaya.

This is the type of mortar and pestle used to make som tum:

Yep! I wasn't talking about you when I first posted. But I've
somehow managed to kill two birds with there mere mention of a
"rock" in this thread.

Thanks for taking it for the group. You're a true trooper.
