Here is the thai one which is not porous at all:
http://www.amazon.com/Stone-Granite-...ref=pd_sim_k_3 I saw one at marshall that is from China and made of granite where the outside and the rim is smooth but inside is rough. The packaging instructs not to immerse in water and to wipe clean due to it's porous nature. I bought it (for $12.99). At home, when I cleaned the inside with a wet cloth, I noticed the dust. Makes me wonder the dust would keep coming off with the grinding. Not that I would use regularly but if I use it, it'd be for grinding things like papaya salad. This one at amazon said it's no porous though it is small (though good price; I do not want to pay over $30) but it is out of stock. http://www.amazon.com/Fresco-Granite.../dp/B001334UW2 |

I think you need more rocks in your diet. They're brain food in your case. -sw |

They've been making composite marble for decades. It's basically an epoxy resin impregnated with marble dust. Marble countertops for restrooms and cheapo M&Ps have been made of fake marble for years. > The packaging instructs not to immerse in water and to wipe clean > due to it's porous nature. I bought it (for $12.99). That sounds bogus. Sure, granite will absorb moisture. Think of exploding granite river rocks, but they've been submerged underwater for who knows how long. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I wash mine occasionally, but basically I jes dust the last spice powder out. It's not like you're leaving it in the water to soak, overnight, or that granite absorbs water instantly like a sponge. It doesn't. You wanna see some real stone dust, try a molcajete, a Mexican M&P. You'll be spitting gravel and tooth fragments for a week. As for the whole curry paste thing, Thai's use a different sort of M&P for that, anyway. I had one (pottery mortar and wood pestle) and I've made green curry from scratch. Don't bother. You can buy excellent curry pastes off the shelf. http://thaifoodandtravel.com/blog/th...ar-and-pestle/ http://www.templeofthai.com/mortar_a...tar_pestle.php nb |

It would destroy shredded papaya. This is the type of mortar and pestle used to make som tum: http://importfood.com/claymortarpestle.html See: http://importfood.com/videos/LarbSomtum8.html -- Clay Irving > A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject. - Winston Churchill |

I wasn't talking about you when I first posted. But I've somehow managed to kill two birds with there mere mention of a "rock" in this thread. Thanks for taking it for the group. You're a true trooper. -sw |
