Our local mkt is having a sale on fresh blackberries. Six ozs for
only $1!! I've bought 2 pkgs and they are very good. What can I do
to preserve them, short of canning? I'm thinking mash 'em up with
sugar and put in freezer bags. Yes? No? I need advice.

What I'd try is to place the blackberries in a single layer on a baking
sheet and place in the freezer. Once frozen, put the berries in a
ziploc baggie or container and keep that in the freezer. YMMV ;D

And don't wash 'em first either.

That's what I would do.

You dawg! Freeze them flat on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper or
parchment; then bag them up and use at will as you will. I wouldn't
mash or sugar until I was going to use them. That's limiting.

I pick them every early autumn. I freeze them whole then bag them, or I
line a pie plate with foil, make blackberry pie filling in it, then when
frozen wrap tightly and remove from the pie plate. When I want to make the
pie, I can just make crust, put the filling in, cover and seal and bake it.

The whole ones make frozen yogurt for my diet. In my mini-processor I put
plain fat free yogurt, Splenda and frozen berries. Turn it on less than 30
seconds and it turns into dark and deep blackberry frozen yogurt.

I grow them, too. Those go into the peach blackberry pies during the
summer.

I'm used to eating them fresh, too, as in CAs hot climate,
blackberries grow wild, everywhere. So common, in fact, they're
considered a pest weed and must often be eradicated.

The berries I'm getting on sale are from Mexico and suffer the same
problem of most agribiz produce, namely, visual perfection with
reduced flavor. Not a moldy berry in 5 lbs, but much less flavorful
than a sun rippened wild berry. Decent juice content. I'm freezing
the last 2 lbs, today, and will save about 2/3 lb for a pie. They are
good on my Hagan Daaz vanilla, but could use a bit more flavor.

I might try adding other flavors, like ginger, mint, or cardamom, to
enhance the pie or whatever I might make. Any other flavor
suggestions to go with blackberry?

There's a thought. Two ways to look at that idea, though. A) Buying
insanely expensive Chambord negates all the $$ I saved buying the
amazingly cheap blackberries B) I saved enough money on the berries to
safely afford Chambord. I'll think about it. Still, an excellent
idea. Thank you.
