Default Chambord cough syrup

I bought some of this stuff to enhance all those blackberries (5lbs)
I got such a great deal on. Yikes! No one told me this stuff tastes
like Robitussan D. I'm now not-too-enthusiastically partaking of some
Chom/vodka on ice. Maybe I'll get used to it. Bleh.... :P

Top it up with some champagne - that'll do the trick!

Use it as a mixer, or an ice cream topping.

Maybe they made Robitussan D to taste like Chambord.

Likely the only way they manage to sell that garbage. The Robitussin
products do nothing, if you want actual relief form coughs and whatever
other symptoms look elsewhere.

Yes! Go to a real doctor and DEMAND a codeine-based cough syrup.
Everything else is a scam.

Those are certainly the only ones I've found that are 100% effective.
Indeed the last time I used one years ago, a single dose would last 24
hours. It took a whole 5 doses or so to get past some nasty bronchitis.

Anyone old enough to remember Cheracol? That was great stuff! Had its
share of codeine. When my eldest was small, I believe it required a
signature. Pediatrician would recommend it for an ear infection until we
could bring the screaming little one in to the office. The codeine
killed all kinds of pain.

Janet, wondering how the kids grew up not being junkies.

I thought you could still get that. Codeine works great as a cough
suppressant. I got codeine cough syrup several years ago before the
band had a big show, because I had a horrible cough. I think that
some codeine cough syrups are still schedule five.

The anti drugs fanatics are afraid of their own shadows. I'd like to
see each and every one of them writhe in pain and beg for relief. To
the assholes who say that when you use illegal drugs, you support
terrorism, I say that every person who supports drug laws supports
terrorism. I grew up when codeine cough syrup was over the counter.
I didn't become an addict, and the only thing I was ever seriously
addicted to was tobacco, though it's only because of a lack of genetic
predisposition that I didn't become an alcoholic.

Oh, and notbob's post is just bizarre, saying that Chambord tastes
like cough syrup. Chambord is divine. If it weren't so expensive, I
could get hooked on that. As it is, we use it for flavoring whipped
cream and other things.

Good, but not nearly as effective as a proper (narcotic) cough medicine.

Rum tastes like crap compared to Chambord. Guaifenesin does work for
many folks for loosening mucus, but for a suppressant, you are correct
that only the narcotic stuff is a "proper" cough syrup.

The old "patent medicines" of the late 1800' and early 1900's were
certainly "effective", although for what I'm not sure!! I remember one
called Dr Brown's Teething Syrup which contained morphine! And our old
fave which still persists to this day albeit in a radically different
formulation, Coca Cola!!! Originally a medicinal syrup it contained
the extracts of the coca and cola plants, or cocaine and caffeine!!
That would certainly give you a little pick me up, ya think? ;-)

The FDA was formed not so much as to keep people from taking
dangerousl drugs I think as it was to keep people from hawking and
selling INeffective "medications". I found an interesting book
reference online Googling "Dr Brown's Teething Syrup":

http://books.google.com/books?id=0v8...0syrup&f=false

and just look at the plethora of INeffective "medicinal" formulations
they list! :-(

Chambord is good, but there are much better raspberry liqueurs. I had
a discussion with Bud Starr a few years back about Chambord which he
decried as being "not that great", and he introduced me to and sold me
another much better raspberry liqueur. And of course it was more
expensive (much more than Chambord!) but I had the $$ at that time and
OMG was it fantastic! Much better than Chambord. And I remember
telling you about this at the time Bryan, wish I would have shared
some with you. It would have rapidly and effectively dethroned
Chambord as your "best of" liquours!!

Knowing your pharmacology helps a lot. You are absolutely correct
Bryan in that the guanifenesin in Robitussin is an expectorant or
"phlegm loosener" and not an antitussive or "cough suppressant".
Different actions, often complementary to the relief of symptoms of a
cough. But you are incorrect in saying that "only the narcotic stuff
is a 'proper' cough syrup". Other non-narcotic substances have been
shown to be somewhat effective as antitussives, most notable
dextromethorphan which is the most common OTC antitussive available in
the U.S. today.

I assume you mean that you have to pass a drug test periodically.
Otherwise, I don't see any problem with properly using codeine-based
cough medicine for cough. Nobody is proposing to drink it to get high.

Which as I noted does absolutely nothing. It's snake oil garbage, plain

Funny, standardized random controlled trials have shown
dextromethorphan to have some effectiveness for suppressing coughs in
a statistically significant percentage of people.

Maybe not for you, but that's expected. You are not statistically
significant! ;-)

I Googled it, and dextromethorphan's primarily an antitussive. I also
looked it up in my nursing drug book, sane thing, a cough suppressant.

What else do you say it's indicated for?

Perhaps so in sufficient quantities, however that does not mean that is
is present in sufficient quantities in the worthless Robitussin product.
There are many snake oil products out there that technically contain a
valid active ingredient, but contain it in minuscule quantities.
